Board Member Appointment: Appointment of Members of the Board of VisitScotland
The appointments take effect from 1 December 2023
Scottish Ministers are looking to appoint up to three Members of the Board of VisitScotland.
We value very highly the benefits of having different experience and points of view on our Boards and we are keen that people from all walks of life apply for public appointments. Scottish Ministers particularly welcome applications from people with protected characteristics that are currently under-represented on the Visit Scotland Board including women, disabled people, people from ethnic minority communities, people aged under 50, people whose sexual orientation is not heterosexual.

VisitScotland
VisitScotland is the Scottish Government Non-Departmental Public Body responsible for promoting the interests of the tourism and events industry across Scotland. It has wide statutory powers to promote tourism and has a core budget of around £50 million per annum. It is funded in part by the Scottish Government, and the Minister for Small Business, Innovation, Tourism and Trade makes appointments to the Board which currently has eight members including the Chair.

Remuneration and time commitment
Members receive £356.00 per day for a time commitment of two days per month. On occasions there may be a requirement for a higher commitment, however, this would be agreed in advance and you would be fully reimbursed. Reasonable expenses incurred will be reimbursed. The appointments are non-pensionable.

Skills and Experience
Ministers are looking to fill three specific roles on the Board. Applicants are able to apply for more than one role. Full details on how to apply are set out in the Applicant Information pack and the Application Form.
Role One
The successful candidate will be appointed to the VisitScotland Audit and Risk Committee with a view to them shadowing the current Chair of the Committee and taking over as Chair when the current Chair stands down in 2024.
The successful candidate will have a financial accounting qualification awarded from a recognised body and demonstrate:
- audit experience within a large complex organisation or international accounting experience at senior level; and
- the ability to chair a committee.
Role Two
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- experience in a multi-national organisation in the wider hospitality and leisure industries such as events, hotel management/operations, tour management.
Role Three
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- experience and understanding of the role of Universities and Colleges in attracting people to visit, study, teach, work and live in Scotland.
All Three Roles
Regardless of which role is being applied for, successful candidates must demonstrate:
- the ability to take a strategic view of an organisations long term objectives;
- a good understanding of government policy, national priorities, and local issues relevant to a public body;
- excellent interpersonal, communications and networking skills.
