Apprenticeship Length:
4 Year Fixed Term Contract (Vehicle Technician and Auto Installation Technician Apprenticeship's)
West Yorkshire Police is currently recruiting two committed and enthusiastic individuals into vacant apprenticeship roles within its Transport Department. The two vacancies are within difference areas of the department and the following positions are available:
1 x Vehicle Technician Apprentice position available.
1 x Auto Installation Technician Apprentice position available.
The Vehicle Technician Apprenticeship:
West Yorkshire Police’s workshop is located in Wakefield and currently has twenty fully qualified vehicle technicians as well as two apprentices. This team of highly skilled technicians service and maintain a fleet of over 1200 Police vehicles.
As an apprentice you will work alongside a mentor who will teach and guide you when on site for four days of the week. The fifth day of the week will be spent on day release to college where you will study and complete a light vehicle maintenance and repair course to level 3.
This apprenticeship is for four years. The first three years you will work with a mentor and complete the above college course. The fourth and final year will be spent working independently, refining your skills and increasing your knowledge to demonstrate that you have the ability to successfully apply for a full-time role as a vehicle technician within West Yorkshire Police.
The Auto Installation Technician Apprenticeship:
West Yorkshire Police’s Vehicle Preparation Unit (VPU) is located in Wakefield and currently has eight fully qualified Auto Installation Technicians, three fully qualified Fabricators and an apprentice. This team of highly skilled individuals commission a wide range of vehicles for West Yorkshire Police and our regional Forces. Individuals within this team convert standard vehicles into Police vehicles using specifications and installing specialised equipment. The team commission vehicles such as cell vans, dog vehicles, road policing vehicles, firearms vehicles and many more. The team also specialise in commissioning covert vehicles.

For both vehicle technician and Auto Installation technician apprenticeships, you will require the ability to demonstrate a keen interest in modern motor vehicle technology with a desire to prepare, diagnose and repair Police vehicles.
Further information regarding the apprenticeship:
For both of the apprenticeships you will be expected to attend College one day a week (in term time) to successfully complete the relevant qualification for the role, it is essential that you are willing to attend further education to undertake and pass the relevant City and Guilds/ NVQ3 qualifications and develop your knowledge and skills in line with the Police Competency Framework and Personal Development Reviews (PDR).
The required qualifications:
Due to the academic element of the training, there is an expectation that applicants will have a minimum of 4 GCSE’s (or equivalent) at A*-C/9-4, these should include English and Maths.
You must have the potential to achieve industry standard performance requirements and must be physically capable of undertaking the duties of the post, as well as being willing to work from alternative garages/locations.
Both Vehicle Technician and Auto Installation Technician apprenticeships, are fixed term contracts for 4 years starting in September 2023 for the new academic year.
