Job Purpose

To provide holistic teaching within the subject area through undertaking all of the following key responsibilities.

Main Responsibilities

Design and deliver teaching materials through use of appropriate teaching, learning and assessment methods.

Challenge thinking, foster debate and develop the ability of students.

Promote the self-esteem and confidence of every student you see.

Mark and assess work and examinations and provide feedback to students.

To be aware of any Health and Safety, disability, equality or welfare issues, and raise any concerns with the appropriate member of staff.

To model behaviour we want to encourage at the Zone, including making sure we are a “safe space” at all times.

Planning and Organising

You will plan own sessions and use our teaching resources and facilities as appropriate to deliver designated lessons. You will make use of the lesson plan sharing folder including adding to and taking from the plans. Will co-ordinate with others e.g. other tutors in relevant subjects or that have a mutual student, to ensure that student needs and expectations are met. Use our tuition management platform to record lesson attendance, make notes on each lesson and provide feedback.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

The tutor will typically hold (or be working towards) a degree or post-graduate qualification along with substantial professional experience in the subject area. They will bring a breadth of experience and knowledge of their field of expertise which will significantly contribute to the student experience and assist in ensuring the distinctiveness of the course. The expectation is that tutors will, through discussion with the admin team, the employee handbook and thorough reading of our policies, have an understanding of Worcester Learning Zone’s key policies and procedures. Have knowledge of how to be inclusive and non-discriminatory in their work and ability to analyse and assess student contributions in session and their homework assignments.

Renumeration

Tutors are paid a standard rate of £16.50 per hour of tuition delivered for all levels up to GCSE.

Attendance at external meetings regarding the child is paid at £16.50 per hour plus travel expenses.

All staff have access to our employee support programme, a free helpline for you and anyone living with you to call for advice on a range of issues from debt, to housing. The helpline can also provide a counselling service.

Person Specification

Essential:

Educated to degree standard (or working towards a graduate qualification).

An understanding of the UK education system and age and stage appropriate expectations.

Previous successful experience of working with school aged children as an instructor, tutor or in a voluntary capacity.

Good interpersonal skills e.g. listening, team work, negotiation.

Ability to plan and organise your own workload and activities to meet agreed deadlines and role requirements.

Excellent standard of written and spoken English.

Respond flexibly to changing priorities.

Desirable:

A relevant teaching qualification and/or experience working with children and young people.

Awareness of specific learning difficulties, and developmental disabilities eg Autism.

Knowledge and understanding of LAC and the associated issues within education this may represent. Ability to deal sensitively with sometimes difficult/upsetting information.

Knowledge of the education system, home education and other statutory and voluntary sectors.

Previous successful experience of working in a school, college or other child focussed environment e.g. children’s home.

Ability and willingness to travel throughout Worcestershire.

Awareness of safeguarding issues (training will be given where necessary).
