This is an exciting opportunity to join the Urology department at West Hertfordshire NHS Trust. This post is a 2 year fixed term contract. The Department of Urology is based at all three of our sites, Watford General Hospital, St Albans City Hospital and Hemel Hempstead Hospital. This post provides excellent opportunities to gain valuable experience in all areas of Urology. Our team treat a diverse community with a wide range of pathologies. We have successfully trained and mentored doctors to apply and obtain a National Training number in Urology.
This is really exciting time to join West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust, as the Trust is in line to receive government funding for major redevelopment works with preparatory works already underway. This redevelopment will include all new buildings to house our Acute Medicine and Emergency Medicine services.
The trust also have ambitious plans to build a dedicated Urology Centre housing out-patient clinics, diagnostic and administrative support services within the next year, providing a state of the art facility for both staff and patients.
You will be required to work to a 1:11 on-call duty rota, which will be produced in advance and will include prospective cover for annual leave for colleagues.
The Main duties of the post will involve seeing, diagnosing, and treating Urology patients, referring to other clinicians or general practitioners where appropriate and theatre.
You will be expected to work closely with appropriate nursing, professional, technical, administrative and support staff.
You will be responsible jointly with the CT Drs, Registrars and consultants for ensuring high standard of care is delivered to patients. In particular, the teams should organise themselves such that twice-daily review of patients occurs at Watford General Hospital.
You will be responsible for ensuring adequate clinical notes are made in accordance with good medical practice.
You may, on occasions, be asked to assist in the teaching of medical students.

Watford General Hospital is a busy district general hospital, with Greater London, with a significant number of emergency and elective cases. There will be exposure to major vascular, colo-rectal and upper GI cases as well as major breast cancer surgery.
The team structures are ‘firm-based’ which benefits continuity of care, and provides an excellent training environment. The successful candidate is expected to perform audits and help with undergoing research within the department. This will help them to improve their CV by participating in national and international conferences and by publishing in peer review journals.
The full educational programme will be discussed and adjusted at the beginning of the placement to meet the post takers’ training needs. Study leave can also be provided facilitate this.
