Position Overview
A number of auxiliary opportunities exist in the Solid Waste Department that involves driving and swamping on a tandem axle rear load garbage packer with a G.V.W. of 66,000lbs. The successful incumbents will be assigned to a two-person crew, and are prepared to do physically active work, which entails sharing equally the truck driving and swamping duties to collect both garbage and yard trimmings/organics, the operation of the lift, and packer compaction equipment. Responsibilities include routine equipment maintenance and performing pre and post trip inspections, including washing the truck; completing daily work records; enforcing, removing and tagging banned materials; explaining rules and regulations to residents and public interaction in terms of handling complaints. Other duties may include streetscape waste collection, cart repair, and swamping and driving the jitney for commercial operations. The work is performed in accordance with prescribed schedules and work performance is reviewed by a supervisor in terms of safe and efficient vehicle operation, quality of service and in meeting assigned schedules.
The successful applicant will possess:
- A thorough knowledge of the rules of safe operation and precautions necessary to avoid accidents in driving a tandem axle rear load garbage packer.
- Considerable knowledge of the existing collection routes and schedules of the area serviced and regulations governing the work.
- Considerable knowledge of the District streets and traffic routes.
- The ability to operate auxiliary equipment safely and efficiently.
- The ability to prepare and maintain complete, accurate and detailed routine work records and provide information and explain applicable rules and regulations to the public in a courteous and professional manner.
- The ability to follow schedules and understand oral and written instructions.
- The physical ability and agility to perform swamping tasks.
- The skills to operate the truck and have a mechanical aptitude.
Qualifications:
Completion of grade 10, supplemented by truck driving experience preferably as a Truck Driver – Swamper 1, as well as holding a valid B.C. Class 3 Driver’s Licence with Air Endorsement.
The District of North Vancouver will facilitate training for successful candidates not currently in possession of a valid Class 3 BC Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement. To be considered for these positions, applicants must possess an Unrestricted Class 5 License and provide a current driving abstract that reflects a safe driving record.
Confirmation of a valid Driver’s License along with a current Driver’s abstract should be provided with your application.
The District of North Vancouver will facilitate training for successful candidates not currently in possession of a valid Class 3 BC Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement. Compensation
The wage rate for this unionized position is $29.71 (2021 rates) per hour plus 12% in lieu of all benefits increasing to 16% following the completion of 1600hrs of work
