TRANSPORT SUPERVISOR - SOUTHERN ENGLAND
Salary: £28,000 - £32,000 per annum
Reports to: Transport Manager
Department: Trading
Contract: Permanent
Hours: Full time 37.5 hours per week
Location: Home-based with occasional travel across the country to meetings, store visits etc. You need to live in Southern England (anywhere south of Birmingham) to be eligible to apply for this role.

As the sector-leading charity retailer, and following a review of our operational stock management, fulfilment, and distribution we are entering an exciting new core infrastructural change with the introduction of Regional Distribution Centres (RDCs) to our portfolio of shops and superstores. In Team Trading, we’re ambitious and ready for growth. These changes will ultimately drive forward our profitability as the sector-leading charity retailer and improve our contribution towards our mission of beating cancer.
Our RDCs will provide an opportunity for us to process, store and distribute stock across our network, while also providing an extension to our Marketplace and e-commerce activity.
Part of this change will include the introduction of a new centralised driver management team to provide specialist support for our drivers and deliver investment in new fleet management software.
We are looking for an experienced Transport Supervisor to assist with the day to day running of Cancer Research UK’s busy retail driver team. This will involve supporting the delivery of a high standard of service to our shops, superstores, warehouses, supporters, and corporate partners.
Alongside another Transport Supervisor who will responsible for the North of the UK including Scotland, you will work with 50+ busy drivers, so we are looking for candidates who have extensive experience working with drivers, understanding them and are able to support them to achieve their potential.
You will also be confident in supporting the management of the driver’s productivity, annual leave and monitoring sickness and absenteeism. We are looking for someone who wants to a build a diverse team which works together well, ensuring everyone is engaged and motivated, creating a culture of ownership and high performance.
What will I be doing?
  • Working closely with the Transport Manager utilising matrix management principles to assist in the management of the retail core and superstore drivers and vans
  • Day to day point of contact for driver assistance and queries; providing operational support and resolving problems in a timely way whilst working closely with the Transport route coordinator
  • Contributing to the planning, development, and organisation of the new transport team
  • Plan and deliver regular meetings with driver teams, linking to field meetings where appropriate
  • Liaise with internal key stakeholders to resolve any issues with deliveries or collections, working closely with the transport route coordinator to mitigate loss of high service levels
  • Ensure drivers are effectively using driver supporting and route software, e.g. telematics, completing driver training when required; support the Transport Route coordinator with data analysis and recommending operational efficiencies
  • Regularly audit stock management routes with drivers to achieve safe and efficient deliveries/collections and make recommendations for improvements to the transport team
  • Develop and deliver regular reporting on driver performance and meeting SLAs
  • Manage on road issues supporting the Transport and Fleet manager in the investigation of driver incident reports as required
  • Help to organise service and maintenance of vehicles in line with legal requirements, inclusive of forward planning with the Transport route coordinator for any van downtime
  • Ensure all driver training requirements are met and regularly reviewed in line with the Driver’s Handbook, H&S and safeguarding policy
  • Ensure all vehicles and drivers conform to relevant Road Traffic legislation; monitoring driver vehicle checks alongside the H&S team
  • Carry out license checks of current and new drivers as required as part of Fleet policies
What skills will I need?
  • Previous experience in transport supervisor role or similar with strong focus on health and safety with ability to motivate team
  • Understanding of transport legislation and best practice
  • Strong organisation skills
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), including basic PC skills – Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Self-motivated, self-sufficient, problem solving.
  • Effective decision maker with the ability to work under pressure
  • Proven ability in supporting & motivating a team of drivers to produce excellent service to the retail network
  • Transport industry knowledge including the use of telematics to understand driver behaviour and to maximise productivity
  • A full driving licence and flexibility to travel for meetings/training/site visits is essential
