Salary:
£32,020 to £34,723 per annum.
Working Pattern: Full time, 37 hours per week, flexible working available.
Location: County Hall, Chichester with hybrid working options.
Interview Date: 11/05/2023.

This job will make a vital contribution in ensuring that the transport the Council arranges is safe and suitable. The post holder will ensure that transport staff training and safety issues are constantly reviewed.

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring as far as possible that the transport the Council has commissioned is being delivered safely and correctly by transport operators, through the provision of first-rate staff training and appropriate health and safety policies and procedures.

The role is predominantly office based, but with some travel around the county - visiting schools and other sites to make checks on the transport, transport staff, and transport vehicles and equipment being used, or to deliver training.

Demands of the role include:

  • Working on your own initiative, but with management support, review current training requirements and delivery methods, to ensure they are kept up to date, and meet the needs of the transport service,
  • Thinking strategically about future training requirements to ensure the local transport workforce is best equipped to provide an excellent service,
  • Attention and alertness while carrying out an assessment or site visit,
  • Having an understanding of the needs for staff delivering transport for passengers with special needs, such as what suitable equipment is available, when and how it is used to facilitate safe travel,
  • Significant interaction with staff, service users and transport providers, challenging poor performance or poor safety where observed in person, and following up with written reports and recommendations,
  • Planning journeys and driving or travelling around the County.

Experience and Skills


Key Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to design training courses on a variety of subjects.
  • Ability to deliver training to a variety of audiences.
  • Strong analytical skills to identify training needs and recommend and implement improvements in existing and new training.
  • Ability to assess risks and write risk assessment reports and recommendations.

Qualifications and/or experience:

  • Experience of designing training.
  • Experience of delivering training.
  • Previous responsibilities for Health & Safety.
  • Experience of assessing risks.
  • Previous experience working in a transport related environment.
  • Previous contract management experience.
  • Understanding of safe travel systems and equipment and how they are used.
  • A levels or equivalent qualifications or experience.
