Job overview

Our world-leading transport modelling teams play a crucial role in TfL’s evidence-based decision-making processes. You will have the opportunity to gain experience across our transport modelling and data teams, ranging from strategic London-wide topics to very local area micro-simulation of individual person movements. You will understand the data that is available at TfL, how it informs our models and other analytical tools, how to use the analytical tools and models, the interactions between them and how the outputs are used by stakeholders across TfL and beyond.

What will I be doing?

As a graduate, your two-year development programme will be made up of at least four placement rotations, including at least one in each of our three transport modelling and data analysis teams. Our aim is to equip you with the range of skills and experience you need for a successful career in transport modelling and analysis. We also understand that everyone’s career is different, so every graduate’s journey is unique. Here’s an idea of what yours could look like:

Placement 1 – Operational Modelling and Visualisation

You will use one or more of our industry-leading highway network models, local area micro-simulation models or junction models to support the design, implementation of the signal timing strategies, build and operation of road enhancement schemes, such as a new cycle route, bus lane or to support a large area of new housing. You will prepare the models, informed by data, to ensure they are suitable for the assessment, undertake the assessment, analyse the outputs and utilising our team’s visualisation function to create unique ways in which we can present the complex modelling analysis into a simple medium that our wide a varied stakeholders can understand.

Placement 2 – Public Transport Service Planning

You will undertake modelling and analysis to inform decisions about public transport service changes. You will use one or more of the team’s station, train service or public transport network models. You will work with stakeholders to identify the appropriate scope of work and with technical experts to ensure the models are used accurately. These changes could include updates to bus or rail services to better meet passenger demand across London or plans to update stations or understanding the impact of closures to support planned improvement works. You will become familiar with the wealth of public transport data we use to inform service changes to Buses, LU, Elizabeth line, DLR, London Overground and Trams.

Placement 3 – Strategic Analysis

You will work with data and tools at a London-wide level informing key questions around the transition to net-zero carbon or how London may change in different future scenarios. You will work with our strategic transport modelling suite, MoTiON, or maybe one of emerging innovative forecasting tools such as our Activity Based Model or our land-use transport interaction model. There could also be the opportunity to work with our environmental models to inform initiatives such as the ultra-low emissions zone and/or work with data to monitor the progress we are making towards our ambitious targets. You will work on themes that are major challenges for London and beyond, such as air quality, or assess how major schemes, such as High Speed 2, will impact London.

You are expected to complete each of the placements outlined above. There is a lot of scope to tailor each placement to your skills and interests due to the breadth of work in each team. You will be expected to learn the basics of transport modelling and understand that data that is available to TfL and how it is used. Your placements may become more specialised or focussed in, for example, data science, modelling or analytics if your interests move in that direction.

Where can this career take me?

Upon completing the scheme, you are expected to roll-off into one of our modelling or analytical teams and be an active participant in those communities. You will work in close liaison with project managers and sponsors, as well as fellow modellers and analysts, to understand the objectives of the technical work and tailor the scope accordingly. You will keep abreast of the latest travel trends to ensure they are represented in our analysis. As you gain more experience you will be expected to lead ever larger areas of work and, eventually, manage a small team. TfL is a large organisation and there will be opportunities to gain experience and progress.

What training and support will you get?

Whilst on the scheme, we’ll support your technical development through a wide range of practical training with our industry leading experts. There will also be the opportunity for training in topics such as presentations skills and project management. We’ll also support your professional development through a combination of mentoring opportunities, structured networking opportunities with other graduates and alumni as well as the external transport modelling and analysis community. You will receive one-to-one support throughout the programme, including on-the-job training from experts, from your scheme sponsor and your line manager.

What do we look for?

Everything we do as an organisation is to ensure that our evolving city remains future-proof for millions of Londoners. Our talented graduates form a vital part of that vision, so it’s important that we find the best people to help us do this. We’re looking for people who;

· Are intrigued by the role transport can play in addressing the challenges facing London

· Are passionate that decision making should be grounded in analytical evidence

· Are motivated to seek solutions to complex problems

As a member of the team, we’ll give you responsibility and the opportunity to add value from day one. If you are excited by inspiring and influencing the future of London and are up for a challenge and enjoy using analysis to solve problems, then this is the career path for you.
