JOB SUMMARY


The Academic Support Coach provides plans, and implements, supervises and evaluates academic components of the Governor’s Emergency Education Recovery Program (GEER) through Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta’s afterschool program. This role provides tutoring instruction and activities for young people identified to participate in the GEER Program. This position is grant-funded through June 30, 2023.


The Academic Coach nurtures the joy of discovery and encourages Club members’ active involvement in the learning process. The program takes place in an afterschool, hands-on environment designed to enrich the Club members’ educational experience. The Club members enrolled are first through 12th graders who are recommended to the program by their regular classroom teachers, School Principals or through an internal assessment process.


The Academic Coach takes the lead role in tutoring identified young people ensuring the daily implementation of interventions and activities designed and implemented to achieve GEER goals. This position is responsible for choosing appropriate lessons that are engaging, rigorous and exciting to help motivate students to learn.


The Academic Coach works with all other staff to fulfill Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta’s mission to ignite the unlimited potential of kids and teens by creating safe, inclusive and engaging environments.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES


Evaluation & Assessment
  • Evaluate on-going needs of Club members and reviews and revises interventions to meet emerging needs. Includes preparation for and support of informal and formal evaluation of program effectiveness.
  • References initial participant intake forms to determine needs and completes periodic tracking forms to track attendance and program participation.
  • Identifies and implements individualized guidance strategies based on the participant’s identified needs in consultation with Executive Director and/or Director of Expanded Learning.


Program Deliverables

  • Plans and implements activities within budget constraints to achieve program objectives.
  • Prepares monthly reports reflecting activities, including attendance and program participation for Director of Expanded Learning.
  • Takes direction from Director of Expanded Learning regarding implementation, supervision and outcome measurement.
  • Assists Executive Director with referral of participants to the program. Focuses on participants’ personal development through diverse program offerings, with a focus on developing their interests and increasing their attendance, social emotional development, program participation, knowledge and abilities.
  • Provides special guidance and development of participants assigned through the GEER project and other assigned projects.
Safety
  • Communicate and enforce organization’s policies, procedures and standards with regard to upkeep, usage and maintenance of program areas and equipment
  • Plan and take action to ensure program areas are safe, attractive, well-maintained, and clean and meet health and safety standards
  • Ensure emergency procedures are implemented and followed and take actions to prevent accidents
  • Respond to injury and signs of illness and report member, staff, and/or volunteer accidents/incidents/injuries to supervisor; complete appropriate reports


EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
:


Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Social Work, or related field preferred


Experience

  • Teaching certification or classroom experience preferred or three+ years of working in youth development or education programs


Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to creatively plan, coordinate, organize and implement quality classroom lessons and activities directly and through collaboration with other teachers and staff
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other departments/organizations to deliver a quality after-school classroom experience to students
  • Knowledge of Georgia Standards of Excellence and student learning
  • Wealth of knowledge and experience in best practices for teaching reading, writing, and math
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally, in writing, in classroom settings to students and mentors and to parents
  • Ability to resolve classroom conflicts and problems
  • Demonstrated ability to control expenses and creatively use resources
  • Demonstrated ability to persuasively promote and deliver curriculum and activities
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and to develop solutions to problems with limited supervision
  • Excellent human relations skills and ability to motivate students, mentors and volunteers
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school staff, students, mentors and volunteers
  • P.C. Literate, preferably with expertise using Word, MS Office, graphics programs and Photoshop


ENVIRONMENT & WORKING CONDITIONS


Community-based location that serves youth, families and community members daily. Frequent deadlines. Atypical work schedule, including evening work. The position requires walking and climbing stairs; Light work, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently.


EMPLOYEE CLASSIFICATION


Nonexempt employees are entitled, under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), to time and one-half their "regular rate" of pay for each hour they actually work over the applicable FLSA overtime threshold in the applicable FLSA work period.
