The post holder will undertake training in the specialist areas of Obstetrics and General Ultrasound. This will involve studying towards a postgraduate qualification on a day or block release system at a university of the Departments choice. Participation in the extended day rota will be required.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated Radiographer who is looking to focus their career along the ultrasound speciality route and to join our multi-disciplinary team working in our ultrasound suites at The Royal Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch Hospitals. University Hospitals Dorset supports a forward thinking Radiology department which provides development opportunities and actively promotes CPD with funding available for external courses.
We are a friendly supportive team which currently consists of twenty five sonographers who are responsible for independently performing and reporting Ultrasound examinations while ensuring the highest standard of patient care. On completion of the ultrasound training you will be expected to participate in the Ultrasound extended day roster (37.5 hours over 4 days) include weekend working (approximately 1 in 10), as we now provide a seven day service ensuring we put the needs of our patients first.

We are considerate towards protecting staff against RSI with up-to- date ergonomic equipment and ultrasound lists designed to support safe practice. We are also responsible for supervising trainee Sonographers and making a contribution to our departmental quality initiatives.
- Learn to analyse complex condition related information and assess patients to plan and undertake ultrasound examinations, which optimise patient care, ensure patient privacy and dignity, minimise discomfort and result in high quality diagnostic examinations.
- Learn to undertake a range of ultrasound examinations and have the ability to modify these techniques when appropriate, taking into account the patient’s condition. Some patients may be terminally ill, distressed and in pain, have difficulties communicating (e.g. hard of hearing, CVA), learning difficulties, be under the influence of drugs or alcohol or be verbally aggressive. Occasionally patients may be violent.
- Under the supervision of qualified Sonographers, learn the technical skills and knowledge required to perform obstetric and general ultrasound examinations. This will include trans-vaginal and testicular scans. Keep a record of clinical practice and be assessed on clinical ability
- Learn the skills required to formulate a diagnostic report from a range of sonographic findings.
- Undertake theoretical studies, assignments and exams at a designated University, working towards the knowledge and skills required to pass the Postgraduate Diploma in Ultrasound.
- Comply with the trusts minimal lifting and handling policy ensuring the use of recognised and safe techniques.
- Comply with safe scanning guidelines to minimise repetitive strain injury (RSI) and complete online Sonographers manual handling theory test.
- Comply with departmental Health and Safety policies.
- Take part in patient resuscitation in times of emergency.
- Observe Infection Control policies with regard to patients, staff and equipment. Ensure ultrasound rooms and equipment is clean and tidy before each patient episode and at the end of each session.
- Frequent periods of Concentration will be required when undertaking all the above tasks.
- Undertake any other such duties as may be deemed necessary by the Ultrasound Clinical Lead and agreed by mutual consent
Base Location: Royal Bournemouth Hospital. Please note this post will include rotation to Christchurch and Poole Hospital.
