Ofgem is Britain’s independent energy regulator. Our role is to protect consumers now and in the future by working to deliver a greener, fairer energy system.
The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is responsible for providing all legal advice for Ofgem and its governing body and managing the organisation’s exposure to legal risk.
The OGC supports Ofgem’s activities through hubs focused on the following areas:
- Consumer & Competition
- Enforcement and Emerging Issues
- Delivery and Schemes
- Networks RIIO
- Networks Commercial
- Systems
As a Trainee, you will be training to become a qualified Lawyer and contribute to providing legal context to UK energy policy decisions. In this position, you will develop your expertise and provide sound, effective, risk-based legal advice with appropriate supervision and support.
Key Responsibilities
Legal advice (with appropriate supervision and support) to:
- Delivery effective, solutions-focused, high-quality, timely and succinct legal advice.
- Exercise sound legal judgement including the effective management of legal risk.
- Conduct legal analysis and research legal matters related to relevant areas.
- Review relevant documentation related to current, developing and new areas of work.
- Structure solutions for legal issues that may arise for stakeholders in the course of business.
Document production
- Drafting legal advice, and other documents to effectively manage legal risk.
Stakeholder engagement
- Build effective internal and external stakeholder engagement.

This is a fixed term contract for 24 months unless extended or shorted as Ofgem deem appropriate for successful completion of the training requirements. At the end of that period, Ofgem may offer you a permanent, qualified lawyer position (should there be a position available, which is not guaranteed at this stage) and subject to satisfactory completion of training requirements and meeting standards required of a qualified lawyer position (and any further interview or assessment Ofgem deems appropriate).
