Learn on-the-job with our Healthcare Support Worker Development (HCSWD) programme, where you will receive all the training and support you need to become a Healthcare Support Worker (HCSW), or also known as a Healthcare Assistant (HCA).

We have a unique opportunity at University Hospital Southampton over a 6-month paid supervised placement in a Children’s Paediatric ward, with additional training as an Early Years Support Worker for some applicants. Note you do not need any previous healthcare or childcare experience to apply.

Throughout your placement, you’ll have access to weekly pay, paid annual leave as well as our standard NHS Professionals staff bank member benefits. Once you have successfully completed the programme, you will achieve the nationally recognised Care Certificate, enabling you to be able to work flexibly at any of our partner Trusts.

Pay Rates:

  • Days: £10.42
  • Saturdays/Nights: £14.69
  • Sunday/Bank Hols: £19.07

What does the programme involve?

Depending on the programme, you will either complete your 6-month placement entirely in a Paediatric ward, or if you join the Early Years placement, you will begin with 3 months training in Taplins Childcare followed by 3 months in a Paediatric ward.

Whilst on placement, you will work through the 15 Standards of the Care Certificate, learning how to meet the daily living needs of your patients as well as being a part of the NHS healthcare team. This includes supporting registered Nurses and other healthcare practitioners in providing patient care, from hygiene to personal and physical comfort.

Main Responsibilities

Typical duties will involve but not limited to:

  • Carry out clinical procedures/tasks as required.
  • Clinical tasks will be determined by the nature of your work and local policy e.g. monitoring the effects of medication.
  • Obtain and test samples and other specimens
  • Clearing and re-stocking consulting rooms
  • Contribute to discharge process
  • Care of wounds
  • Check pain levels and requesting pain relieving medication on patient’s behalf
  • Assist in preparing for clinical procedures and clearing the environment afterwards as appropriate

Early Years duties will also involve:

  • Plan and carry out activities for children in line with Early Years’ curriculum
  • Evaluate activities and maintain online learning journals
  • Liaise with parents/carers
The Ideal Candidate

Who we are looking for…

For this opportunity, candidates do not need any previous healthcare and/ or childcare experience.

We are looking for someone who has a passion for care as well as following the six enduring values that underpin ‘compassion in practice’. The 6Cs are defined as: Care, Compassion, Competence, Communication, Courage, and Commitment.

If you are applying to join the Nursery placement, we will also be looking for someone with an enthusiastic approach to working with children and their families.

Please note that we require:

  • You must be over the age of 18 or turning 18 before the planned classroom training week.
  • You work at least 30 hours a week across earlies, lates and nights during the programme. This is a total of 780 hours over 6 months.

What’s next?

  • Attendance of Assessment Day – Planned for 16th May 2023
  • Attendance of FREE classroom training – Planned for 13th-16th June 2023
  • Attend an Induction week (37.5 hours supervised placement) – Planned for end of June, subject to all recruitment checks being completed

After the programme

Once you have completed your placement and the Care Certificate 15 Standards, you can work as a HCSW or HCA for the Trust at any of their locations, and at any of our NHS Professionals partner Trusts, through the bank. If you have completed the Early Years placement, you can also work as a flexible member of staff at Taplins Childcare.

As your first step in healthcare with the NHS, you could progress your career by gaining experience and accessing further training outside of the programme. In time, you could become a senior HCSW. After that, you could then apply to train as an Assistant Practitioner or Nursing Associate, enabling further avenues such as a Nurse or Midwife.
