About The Role
Training salary £23,730 p.a. following successful completion of the Post Graduate Diploma salary will rise to £28,395 – £35,126 p.a.
Compass is delighted to have been selected as a new provider of Mental Health Support Teams (MHST) in education settings in Birmingham. From 04 September 2023 we will be implementing 4 new MHST’s in North and North East Birmingham and we are now recruiting a number of trainee EMHP posts who will join us at the start of our new opportunity to deliver evidence-based, high-quality and responsive services to meet the mental health and emotional wellbeing needs of children, young people and families (CYPF) in our partner education settings and local communities in Birmingham. These are highly sought after roles and candidates thinking of applying will need to be available to commence induction on 04 September 2023 and post-graduate training later in the same month.
If you have a keen interest in and enthusiasm for a career in CYPF early intervention mental health and emotional wellbeing services this could be the first step; undertaking specialist training in low intensity cognitive behavioural therapy whilst working in practice to deliver positive outcomes with CYPF in a supportive, innovative and committed team.
Trainee Education Mental Health Practitioners will be undertaking a year in supported part-time, remote study with Exeter University whilst developing skills and building confidence in mental health practice within the team and supporting schools to enhance the approach to emotional wellbeing in the school community.

About You
You will deliver short term low intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) informed interventions for children and young people aged 5 -19 years with anxiety, low mood, common challenging behaviours, family and peer relationship difficulties, difficulty adjusting to change or managing emotions in educational settings.
Trainee EMHP’s will also work with educational staff to build on and develop evidenced-based Whole School Approaches.
Trainee EMHP’s must undertake a Post Graduate Diploma in Mental Health Practice in Education Settings, a degree Level 7 qualification at Exter University commencing September 2023. During term time you will be required to undertake training two days per week whilst working within the team 3 days per week developing the skills and enhancing the knowledge gained in training, working under supervision with children, young people, families and in education settings.
On successful completion of training, Trainee EMHP’s will be equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge and capabilities and work as a qualified EMHP as autonomous and responsible practitioners within their scope of practice, alongside education colleagues, delivering schools’ overarching approach to providing mental health and wellbeing support for children and young people.
You will have to demonstrate in your application that you have the ability to study at degree level or have an equivalent level of relevant experience. Experience of working with children and young people and an understanding of the educational system in England is desirable. Candidates who do not have an undergraduate degree may still apply but any offer of employment will be conditional on submission of a critical writing piece assessed by the university.
