Job summary
We are looking for a candidate that is either experienced in dispensing (Primary Care or pharmacy setting acceptable), and/or qualified to NVQ Level 2 in dispensing or if not qualified candidates should be willing to undertake training to achieve qualification, support for which will be provided in the form of 2 additional paid hours per week.

1. Job Purpose
To deliver a high standard of dispensing services and provide front of house contact with patients, relatives and carers relating to all dispensing matters.
2. Specific Responsibilities
- Ensure all patients are treated with dignity and respect, ensuring appropriate telephone and face-to-face manner is used with patients and callers thus promoting a pleasant and positive image of the Practice.
- Respond to all queries and requests for assistance from patients and other visitors to the surgery – whether face-to-face, by telephone or upon request from the GP Partners, Lead Dispenser or Practice Manager.
- Ensure all records, electronic or paper are kept up-to-date, maintained and filed correctly.
- Process repeat prescription requests received via the approved Practice systems in accordance with Practice protocols.
- Produce prescriptions for GPs to sign in an acceptable time frame.
- Generate requests for medication on behalf of the patient for non-repeat items.
- Act upon compliance issues, liaising with the appropriate clinician.
- Input data into the patients’ healthcare records as necessary.
- Deal with all prescription related enquiries in a timely manner.
- Place daily orders for medication with wholesalers and suppliers, maintaining all associated paperwork.
- Maintain an understanding of medication costs and order from most appropriate supplier.
- Dispense prescribed medication to patients as directed by the GP Partners, ensuring all queries are followed up or brought to the attention of the appropriate GP.
- Collect all NHS charges and complete associated paperwork in accordance with Department of Health regulations.
- Work unsupervised and on own initiative, carrying out tasks such as repeat dispensing, stock/date checking.
- Complete other tasks relating to QOF, the DSQS and other schemes the practice is committed to, completing all relevant paperwork, recording and audit.
- Cover all dispensing duties as required or delegated to you by the GP Partners, Lead Dispenser or Practice Manager.
- Attending meetings and training events as required.
3. Quality Standards
- Full understanding and update awareness of medicine ethics and ways of working.
- Proven history of high standards in accuracy.
- Be fully conversant with Practice Policies and Procedures.
- Participate in Practice meetings, giving feedback or contributing to systems or plans aimed to improve patient experience.
- Previous experience in a dispensing role or qualified to NVQ Level 2 in Dispensing. If not qualified, willing to undertake training course to achieve qualification.
- Be aware of and meet the requirements of the GMS Contract and QOF related tasks.
4. Customer Service
- Provide advice and support to patients and public who contact the surgery, updating Lead Dispenser and/or Practice Manager of any important issues whenever necessary.
- Deal with challenging telephone and face-to-face conversations in an empathetic manner.
- Liaise with other organisations and clinicians in a professional manner at all times – ensuring the image of the Practice is not compromised.
