Same Day Emergency Care Unit
Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner Band 6
Exciting opportunities are being developed to work within the developing Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC) at Dorset County Hospital. We would like to invite people who would like to as a Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner who are keen to support medical, surgical, urological, orthopaedic, and ENT emergency work to avoid admission to hospital for patients.
We are looking for enthusiastic candidates who are organised and can use their own initiative whilst being flexible to frequently changing situations, to work with and support the Registered Nurses/Paramedics and Healthcare Assistants in SDEC where you will be supporting the Acute Physicians and Surgeons in admission avoidance of emergency attendances.
This is a fixed term position of 3 years. Candidates would be required to undertake a three year apprenticeship at university.
There will be an expectation of the applicants to possess excellent communication skills to support the working of the team with internal and external agencies and, fellow professionals to support safe, effective patient discharges from hospital and assistance with patient flow by avoiding hospital admission.
The service is currently Seven days 08.00 – 21.00hrs.
To work in same day emergency care/across the hospital as an advanced practitioner, assessing, diagnosing, planning, implementing and evaluating interventions and treatments for patients attending with undifferentiated and undiagnosed. This includes the ordering and interpretation of tests and investigations, under the direction of a senior Doctor / ACP
To enhance the patient experience by administering a holistic approach to patient care, providing leadership and clinical support to medical and nursing staff, acting as a role model for advanced practice within the Scope of Professional practice.
To use highly developed knowledge and advanced skills, undertaking extended clinical skills and implementing best practice.
To prescribe as an independent non-medical prescriber, in line with local protocols using advanced judgment skills.
To competently deliver care in a fast-paced environment demonstrating an ability to work under pressure, respond to changing priorities whilst contributing to key performance indicators.
To work as part of the senior team, taking an active role in departmental management on a daily basis and developing the service fit for the future, through effective leadership and development of others.
To contribute to service improvement programmes and quality improvement initiatives whilst demonstrating an ability to adapt and change and implement new initiatives.

We are currently developing an expansion of our Emergency Department as part of the Government’s New Hospital Programme and in 2025/26. We are also planning to introduce a digital technology service.
