What is the Graduate Scheme?
As a Wholesale Market Services (WMS) - Trading Graduate, you’ll be joining our Customers business unit, where we’re on a mission to help our customers save energy, reduce their bills and their carbon footprint.
On this 2-year programme you’ll learn from our experts, gain valuable experience, build your confidence, and develop your trading knowledge; helping you to decide where you’d like to specialise in the future for a career in and around Wholesale Market trading activities.
You will be responsible for managing the optimisation of the country’s largest portfolio of zero-carbon generation, with EDF’s ever-growing fleet of net-zero supporting Grid-scale batteries, wind & solar, as well as being the sole operator of the nation’s Nuclear generation.
The capacity for further personal development, both personally and from a skills & knowledge perspective, is also immense, as optimisation within the electricity trading market increasingly relies upon the right blend of automation, algorithms & human experience. Hence, you will also have the opportunity to influence the future development of the Team’s suite of operational & market analysis IT applications.

During this Graduate scheme you will get exposure to the following:
- Trading on our Shift Desk
- Market Analysis
- Market Risk
- Market Compliance function
- Retail Cost Stack and Pricing
- Portfolio Analytics
- Market Development and Reporting
For the first 8 months of your placement, you will be working exclusively with the Shift Trading team and will go through the training and authorization process to attain the first step of Shift Trader trading rights.
This team operates 24hrs a day 7 days a week - optimizing assets and trading EDF’s position happens every day of the year.
It is important that you are comfortable working shifts, a typical shift pattern could look something like this:
- Day and night shifts
- 5 days on, 5 days off
- 4 night shifts followed by 5 days off
- 2 day shifts and 3 night shifts followed by 2 weeks off
The aim will be for you to authorize in month 4 or 5 then you will continue to work as an authorized trader following a rota pattern or performing analysis and project work.
For the following 12 months you will perform placements in areas that will further develop your knowledge of the energy industry and how trading is one integral part of this. Throughout your program you will be rotating around WMS and have exposure to various areas.
The final 4 months will be with the Shift Trading team once more giving you a chance to again authorize as a trader or to consolidate your learning should you have authorized in your initial placement.
You’ll also have mentors and industry experts to give you advice along the way and help you with decisions about your future career path.

Where you’ll work:
As a Shift Trader there will be a requirement for you to work from our London office. For the other placements you will be able to work flexibly, but travel may be required to our Gloucester office.
To join our team you’ll need:
- 2:2 Bachelor’s Degree or a 2:2 Postgraduate Degree (obtained or expected) in either Maths, any Science related subject, Economics or business.
- Proven ability to operate with integrity and confidence, interpreting complex/incomplete information and able to make considered commercial decisions under tight deadlines
- Ability to adapt quickly to new challenges and thrive in fast-paced environments
- Passion for working in a customer-focused environment
