Immediate start

Fixed term contract for 4 months; availability for weekend work an advantage.

Salary £21.000 per year

Responsibilities
This varied role involves supporting the day-to-day activities in the laboratory, including working with live insects. It requires enthusiasm and attention to detail to ensure we get high quality outcomes. Full training will be provided for all duties, which may include:

• Preparing containers and transferring insects as part of the rearing process
• Identifying and counting male and female insects
• Identifying and counting field samples
• Keeping the laboratory clean and tidy
• Other laboratory and administrative tasks as required

Qualifications and experience
Since full training is provided, laboratory experience is not required but would be an advantage. You need to be able to follow processes accurately while observing all safety and hygiene rules (including for Covid-19). You will need to keep diligent written records of the procedures followed and results of analyses. Familiarity with Word and Excel would be an advantage.

You need to be comfortable working with live insects, which includes spending some time in the hot and humid insect rearing area. Insects are very small, so you need to have good fine work skills and concentration to perform repetitive tasks over an extended period without losing speed or quality.

Enthusiasm, commitment and attention to detail are more important than academic qualifications.
