The Engineering Technologist I/II will be part of a multidisciplinary team that fields large-scale integrated hydrodynamic experiments at DARHT, the world's premier hydrotesting facility. You will be part of the DARHT Experiments and Diagnostics Group, J-4. The staff in J-4 are responsible for the design, fielding, and analysis of hydrodynamic experiments. We provide experimental leadership, scientific expertise, and lead in the development of state-of-the-art diagnostics. You will assist the group in the fielding of diagnostics, execution of hydrotest experiments, and operation of diagnostic systems.
This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist I or II level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Engineering Technologist I ($81,700 - $133,100)
The Engineering Technologist will support the DARHT Implosion Diagnostics Team, the Radiography Team and lead/assist in fielding advanced diagnostics on hydrotests. The Engineering Technologist will support the operation of the DARHT Detection Chamber (DDC); will conduct DDC system maintenance and upgrades; will lead/assist in the fielding of radiographic, optical, and electrical diagnostics; and will support the execution of integrated hydrotests at DARHT and other firing sites.
- Provide electronic and mechanical support for the deployment and operation of all DARHT hydrotest diagnostics.
- Assemble and evaluate radiographic, electrical, and optical diagnostics for DARHT hydrotests.
- Become a DARHT DDC Operator and DARHT DDC Operations Supervisor.
- Assist in the fielding of diagnostics on experiments.
- Operate diagnostic control systems at DARHT.
- Support installation of cabling and equipment for new DARHT hydrotest diagnostics.
Engineering Technologist II ($90,000 - $147,100)
In addition to what is outlined at the lower level, at this level you will independently field diagnostics on hydrotest experiments, design basic electrical and mechanical systems, and work independently with direction from senior staff, and mentor junior staff. You will develop and implement solutions to problems.
- Work with lead experimenters, diagnosticians, in the design, fabrication, testing and fielding of diagnostic hardware.
- Perform research and gather data needed by experimenters and diagnosticians to solve technical problems and to recommend actions.
- Provide technical direction to design/drafting personnel, and machinists in preparation of hydrotest related drawings and fabrication of hardware.
- Field diagnostic systems on experiments.
- Provide design, prototyping, and construction of new diagnostic, data acquisition, and control systems for DARHT operations and diagnostics.
- Perform maintenance and validation of DARHT DDC control and data acquisition systems.

Minimum Job Requirements:
- Basic knowledge of computer aided drafting techniques using modern software and practices.
- Basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems.
- Demonstrated experience delivering product on schedule while working on multiple projects with shifting priorities.

- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers and demonstrated strong teaming skills.
Additional Job Requirements for Engineering Technologist II:
- Demonstrated knowledge of mathematical formulas used for designing hardware.
- Demonstrated experience using data acquisition systems to acquire data.
- Demonstrated experienced performing analysis of data.
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Demonstrated knowledge of process timing, propagation delays, cable characteristics, and connector characteristics.
- Familiarity with basic fiber optic principles to include basic knowledge of electro-optical component and optical fiber characteristics.
- Basic knowledge of computer programming and programming languages, such as LabView, C, or C++.
- Experience with aspects of the U.S. dynamic testing program such as testing, fielding, or diagnostics.
- Familiarity with the US nuclear weapons stockpile including qualification and certification.
- Demonstrated experience working in environments with a high level of operational formality.

Work Schedule: The position is full time, on site, 9/80 or 5/40 work weeks.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
