Technician - River Monitoring United Kingdom

University of York
Full Time United Kingdom 28762 - 33314 GBP ANNUAL Today
Job description

Environment and Geography

We are seeking a Technician to join a team large from York, Sheffield and Durham working on a NERC-funded project that seeks to transform how we evaluate the risks of chemical mixtures to freshwater biodiversity in UK rivers for current conditions and in the future under climate change. The aim is to deliver a new assessment framework that accounts for the variability in the characteristics of a catchment and determines the combined impacts of mixtures of chemicals, bioavailability modifiers (including pH, suspended solids and dissolved organic carbon) and nutrients on the structure and functioning of species assemblages within the catchment at high spatial resolution. This will allow us, for the first time, to target interventions on chemicals and sources that really matter.

The Department of Environment & Geography is embarking on an ambitious project to define its strategy for the next ten years and beyond. The Department is a leading centre for teaching and research on the world’s environmental issues, and hopes it will have a major part to play in finding sustainable solutions to these challenges.

The Department is proud to hold the Silver award from Athena SWAN and as a department strives to provide a working environment which allows all staff and students to contribute fully, to flourish and excel

The Department hold the following core values:

  • We are inclusive and embrace our diversity
  • We make a positive difference
  • We strive for environmental sustainability
  • We are a friendly and helpful community
  • We are curious and always learning

Role

Working in a small team of environmental chemists, ecotoxicologists and ecologists, the Technician will be responsible for supporting a monitoring study of rivers across Yorkshire. The position would therefore suit individuals with direct experience of methods for environmental monitoring. As the role will involve travel to numerous sampling locations across Yorkshire, a clean driving license is essential.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • HND/HNC or degree
  • Experience of environmental monitoring and sampling methods
  • Experience of environmental measurement methods such as pH, conductivity and nutrients
  • A full clean driving licence
  • IT Skills such as Microsoft word and excel
  • Experience of COSHH and laboratory risk assessments
  • Experience of collating and analysing environmental monitoring data

Interview date: 2nd May 2023

For informal enquiries: please contact Alistair Boxall on [email protected]
