Our network of more than 1,000 laboratories and offices in more than 100 countries, delivers innovative and bespoke Assurance, Testing, Inspection and Certification solutions for our customer’s operations and supply chains.
Due to continued growth, we now have an opportunity for a technician with laboratory experience to join our Materials Testing team in our Production & Integrity Assurance business in Manchester. The role would ideally suit candidates with a materials testing, (metals or non-metallics), background and hands-on practical mechanical skills.
The Role:
- Carry out materials testing programmes for the assessment of materials for resistance to corrosion and mechanical degradation in simulated environments.
- Perform testing to an acceptable standard and in accordance with established procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of observations and calculations.
- Prepare metallic and non-metallic test specimens required for testing projects including use of cutting wheels and linishers.
- Prepare chemical samples and test solutions using general chemical laboratory techniques such as the use of micropipettes, 4-figure balances, dilution methods and calculation of solution concentrations.
- Handle chemicals required during testing in accordance with COSHH, and health and safety risk assessments.
- Prepare of samples for examination “post-test”, including metallographic preparation and examination by microscopy and photography of samples.
- The role entails manual handling, use of hand and power tools, manipulation of autoclave vessels and moving of 50 l gas cylinders.
- Safe handling and use of hazardous and non-hazardous bottled gases including hydrogen sulfide.
- Preparation, maintenance, and operation of a variety of laboratory equipment including pressure vessels and electronic devices.
- Applying discretionary effort in support of the smooth running of projects and the laboratories.
- On the job training will be provided but some experience with metallography, familiarity with pressure systems and Swagelok™ type fittings would be advantageous.
