Description

Do you have an authoritative command of English with the ability to organize, structure, edit, and format technical documents?

Are you someone who enjoys working in a highly collaborative, dynamic environment?

Do you possess strong communication, organizational, and analytical skills?

Are attention to detail, accuracy, and customer service important to you?

Do you enjoy discussing the Oxford comma, split infinitives, and active voice?

Do extra spaces and hard returns in documents drive you mad?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join the Editorial team in the Communications Department at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). We're seeking a talented, creative, highly effective individual to join our team as a Technical Editor. As a member of the team, you will join a staff of dedicated professionals in the area of publications.

As a Technical Editor you will...

  • Edit classified and unclassified technical reports and other diverse communications materials for organization, grammar, usage, and clarity.
  • Input and format text, tables, and graphics.
  • Build and implement page layouts and templates.
  • Interact with teammates, artists, project managers, authors, and other partners, both in person and virtually, to define project requirements and resolve content, production, and scheduling issues.
  • Follow internal and program-specific style guides while editing and formatting.
  • Follow security classification guidelines, as directed by program requirements.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you have ...

  • A bachelor's degree in English, language arts, or other related technical subject area.
  • 3+ years of demonstrated ability editing formal publications and technical documents for organization, grammar, usage, and clarity.
  • Experience following an editorial style guide.
  • Experience formatting documents using paragraph and character styles.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and on a team.
  • A proven ability to manage multiple deadline-driven projects simultaneously with an eye for prioritization.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, including implementing document templates.
  • Ability to obtain Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and ultimately obtain TS/SCI level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You 'll go above and beyond the minimum requirements if you have...

  • Project management experience with large editorial documents or complex document workflows.
  • Proficiency building and maintaining document templates in Microsoft Word.
  • Proficiency with formatting and editing in PowerPoint.
  • Experience in a publishing environment using software other than Word.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud applications, including InDesign, Acrobat, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
  • Experience with Adobe FrameMaker.
  • Experience with advanced features in Word, including using fields, macros, cross-referencing, and outline numbering for sophisticated, multi-file documents.
  • Knowledge of or experience with HTML, XML, LaTeX, or other markup language.
  • Experience with document accessibility, such as 508 compliance.
  • Familiarity with multiple style guides, such as GPO, AP, and the Chicago Manual of Style, and experience creating custom guides.
  • An affiliation with a professional editing association or community.
  • Experience in classified document marking and handling.
  • An active Secret or higher level security clearance.
