Role description:

Do you have a track record in technical and structural leadership and the delivery of complex design and engineering services in the water and energy sectors? Are you passionate about successful project delivery? Is sustainability a key driver for you? Would you like to play a key role to shape a UK wide design focussed community, motivated by working with Contractors and water and energy clients to deliver innovative and efficient structural designs and solutions whilst solving complex challenges? We are delivering some very significant schemes for water and energy companies across all investment areas and collaborating with a number of national and international contractors in the D&B arena. Working closely with the Business Director, Engineering Director and other discipline leads you will be a recognised technical leader, comfortable in leading a technical discipline and complex projects, making significant contributions to shaping how we deliver technical and design services.

You will …

  • be a qualified, experienced Civil & Structural Engineer, familiar with sector best practise
  • provide professional leadership at a senior management level, to deliver all aspects of service for your technical discipline
  • lead and grow your UK and international technical discipline team (currently 28 staff)
  • positively contribute expertise to large multi-disciplinary projects
  • establish and consolidate relationships with clients and own (as appropriate) specific aspects of project and service delivery
  • have credible experience working for contractor clients delivering buildable designs
  • be a seasoned professional who leads by example and is calm under pressure
  • manage and mentor those within your team and those in the wider business seeking your discipline expertise
Role accountabilities:

Discipline

  • Overall discipline lead and expert for structures within the Resilience Global Business Area (GBA) for Arcadis UK and Ireland
  • Development of links within own wider GBA and liaison with others
  • Manage and collaborate with your Operations and Structural Design Leads
  • Prioritise and p romote continual improvement in SHE performance
  • Provide professional leadership for your structural discipline as a senior manager
  • Own all aspects of technical capability, project support and specialist component design
  • Plan future strategies and the evolution of technical service delivery
  • Report to Business Director (line management) and Director of Engineering (functional leadership)
  • Be the final technical review and approval sign off authority for structural design

Team

  • Shape your discipline team capability, working with your Operations Manager, to ensure optimal resource recruitment, deployment and management for projects and frameworks
  • Identify high and low performance managing development and growth to address both
  • Encourage innovative and entrepreneurial thinking
  • Keep the team relevent with current industry technical standards and legislation
  • Actively participate in/sponsor the professional development of reports and colleagues
  • Champion Diversity and Inclusion

Other Technical/Work Winning

  • Perform technical reviews for complex/major project within own and for other GBAs
  • Present Technical guidance and/or webinars where required to the GBA
  • Input to specific technical aspects of individual bids to support the production of high quality winning pursuits

Project Management

  • When managing structural projects or structural inputs to larger projects/ frameworks be responsible for the commercial aspects (contract, invoicing, debt, client management) and balance technical excellence and commercial outcomes
  • Effective review and oversight of structural delivery to time, meeting both quality and budgetary targets, whilst striving to exceed client expectations
Qualifications:
  • Chartered Member of both the Institutions of Civil and Structural Engineers
  • BSc/BEng or MSc/MEng in civil or structural engineering (or equivalent)

Required skills & Experience:

  • Proven success of technical/design leadership of a medium sized team
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering structural engineering into complex multi-discipinary projects
  • Fundemental capability strength and passion for structural engineering
  • Design and design management of a broad selection of structures which should include those in:
    • Heavy civil engineering
    • Soil Structure interaction and foundations
    • Below ground applications
    • Industrial buildings
  • And preferably in:
    • Water Engineering
    • Energy
    • Precast and DfMA
    • General multimaterial buuildings
  • Leading continuous improvement in ‘Safety by Design’ and CDM compliance
  • Working with industry and D&C contractor clients
  • A sound knowledge of engineering contracts and ability to protect Arcadis liability and interest
  • Awareness of key legislation, hazards and safe systems of work
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, e.g. awareness of other discipline inputs and the flexibility that will drive into structural solutions
  • Ability to think strategically within the wider business
  • Existing relationships throughout the industry, peers (and preferably academia) and the ability to establish supporting networks
  • People skills and ability to manage and develop and be sympathetic to a multi-national multi-cultural team
  • Confidence to promote Arcadis in front of the Client and in bidding efforts
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to drive continuous improvement and, where necessary, change
  • Preferred track record of successful whole project management
