Job summary
This role has overall responsibility for delivering high standards of landscape maintenance and horticulture across the historic gardens and grounds of Home Park, the private grounds of Windsor Castle.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and deliver a programme of work that details plans and schedules for weekly, monthly, and seasonal tasks ensuring the landscape and gardens are maintained and presented to the highest level throughout the year;
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including communicating the programme of works as required;
- Prioritise tasks to meet agreed targets and deadlines;
- Engage with and instruct specialist teams and contractors as required to undertake works e.g., Arboriculture, road and ground maintenance and fencing. Identify dependencies, agree works schedule and monitor to ensure works are delivered safely and to specification;
- Lead on planning and delivery of landscape restoration projects (trees, hedges, shrubs and bulbs);
- Ensure safe working practices operate at all times;
- Liaise with relevant teams to ensure that machinery and equipment required to undertake works schedule is available;
- Ensure security and care of plant and machinery;
- Actively provide effective management, direction and support to the team and develop them to meet their potential;
- Ensure expectations and accountabilities are clear and pro-actively manage performance in line with The Crown Estate’s performance management system;
- Understand and follow our employment policies to ensure compliance with relevant employment and health and safety legislation;
- Support the team as required to deliver Estate wide objectives.
Experience and skills required:
- A passion and good understanding of parkland and historic garden landscape management;
- Prior experience in a senior landscape / horticulture role including team management;
- Demonstrable experience and understanding of land-based health and safety practices;
- Knowledge and experience in understanding biosecurity;
- Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to build and maintain effective relationships internally and externally;
- An obsessive eye for detail;
- Effective problem-solving skills;
- Project management skills;
- Good organisational and planning skills and ability to balance priorities.
