Harry's Smokehouse at Ben’s Farm Shop, Staverton
20-30 hours per week
Harry's Smokehouse is our summer outdoor dining venue based in a converted shipping container beside the Staverton farm shop. We’re looking forward to a busy summer season and aim to offer a quirky, rustic and relaxed place to meet and eat, with a range of burgers and other BBQ specialities, plus beers and wines.
we are building a great crew for the Smokehouse and need a couple of extra team mates ASAP as it is proving to be a big hit with locals and visitors alike.
Ben’s Farm Shops is the product of Ben Watson’s enthusiasm for great food. He started developing his skills in butchery, curing hams and bacon and making pies and sausages from pigs raised on the family’s Riverford Farm in 1984. From a converted garage and farm gate sales the business has grown to four thriving farm shops and production kitchen. The shops offer a wide range of groceries as well as products from our own kitchen, and have built our justifiable reputation for being the “real thing”. The name of the business changed from Riverford Farm Shops to Ben’s Farm Shop in 2016 but the ethos and founding principles remain the same.
Whilst we’re hoping for a long and sunny summer season, we have to be realistic and acknowledge that there may be times when bad weather prevents the Smokehouse from opening, so flexibility with hours is required. If possible we may offer alternative work within the business but it may not always be available.
Main Responsibilities:
The Smokehouse team will run alongside the farm shop Café and will report to the Café Supervisor, but will need to be fairly self-sufficient due to location. This is a small team so team members will need to be flexible to cover a range of tasks – mainly front of house service but with the ability to help with food prep and some basic kitchen tasks. You will love the buzz of a busy service and thrive when the pressure (and the heat) is on!
The team will be responsible for all aspects of the day to day smooth and efficient running of the Smokehouse service. This is a hands-on role, with a focus on fantastic customer service, cooking on a BBQ grill, providing table service, all aspects of food safety and hygiene, ordering stock, basic admin tasks, making sure the Smokehouse and seating areas is always looking attractive, clean and inviting.
Person Specification:
· Previous experience of cooking professionally in a restaurant, café, bistro or similar
· Experienced in delivering excellent, professional and engaging customer service
· Flexible approach to work and hours, including evening and weekend working
· Able to communicate fluently in spoken and written English
· Able to work well under pressure and make sound decisions with minimal supervision when required.
· Friendly, pleasant and outgoing personality who is able to effectively supervise a small team and deliver fantastic customer service.
