Team Leader Highways (Climate Adaptation Team)
Responsible for leading the Flood Risk and Tree teams ensuring that the councils response as Local Lead Flooding Authority are delivered to tackle flood risk in an integrated way across the borough. This team is responsible for managing flood risk from surface water, ground water, and ordinary watercourses and hold regulatory powers in relation to flood risk management.
The Tree team are responsible for reviewing and providing comments on planning applications, processing applications for works to trees subject to Tree Preservation Orders and within Conservation Areas, tree safety surveys, raising works orders for tree works, planning enforcement, creating, reviewing, and revoking Tree Preservation Orders, responding to call outs of dangerous trees, and managing the Council’s tree assets through the Council’s tree management software.

The Role
This is a newly created role and an exciting opportunity to be the leading effort to build greener communities by delivering the Council’s climate adaptation strategy. Leading both the Flood Risk and Tree teams, you’ll coordinate our response to flood risks and head up the maintenance of our stock of 330,000 trees—an asset worth £7.5bn.
Taking a customer-centric approach, you’ll work with local communities and internal and external stakeholders to ensure that we meet diverse needs with services of the highest quality. You’ll also drive efficiency within your teams by developing smarter, innovative approaches to managing flood risks and tree assets. That’s how you’ll deliver the future vision for communities set out by the Transport and Highways directorate.
You’ll establish a culture of continuous improvement here. Using data reports to monitor performance against KPIs, you’ll adjust processes to ensure that savings and delivery targets are met and that resources are always used to optimum effect. But it’s in uniting teams and stakeholders behind your inspiring vision for our services that your impact will really be felt.
Your Experience
You’ll have significant experience in a relevant engineering discipline and a successful track record when it comes to performance managing teams and stakeholder partnerships in high-pressure environments. Highly knowledgeable of legislation relating to Local Flood Authorities, your experience with policy and procedures will speak for itself. Passionate about the environment and always up to date on the latest developments, you’ll be able to use your communication and people skills to implement the ideas that will ultimately improve lives in our communities.
