Job description

We made our name by building winning competition cars but we've grown far beyond the race track. Our capabilities include complete ground-up design, build and manufacturing commissions from one-off concept cars to low volume production road cars. All of this takes place at our facility in Wellingborough where you get to see the projects come to life. With so many exciting projects on the go, we are looking to expand our team and have a vacancy for a Team Lead - Body & Exterior Systems to serve as the top level subject matter expert and design authority for Body in White and Exterior systems to successfully deliver these projects on time, to budget and to the required quality standard. The main responsibilities of this role include:

  • Work with the Head of Vehicle Engineering to cost, plan and generate proposals for new projects.
  • Work with the Project Lead Engineer to determine appropriate scope, documentation, validation & sign-off requirements.
  • Liaise closely with the Vehicle, Powertrain and EE Engineering teams to ensure designs are optimised at a vehicle level.
  • To coordinate with Production, Purchasing and Project teams to ensure effective planning and supplier selection.
  • To lead and manage Body System areas to ensure they are resourced adequately with the correct subject knowledge and that research and engineering outputs are recorded in a concise and traceable way.
  • Take overall responsibility for the Body System Technical and Design Specifications to develop safe, reliable, cost effective, legal and competitive solutions.
  • Ensure that RML takes advantage of new and appropriate technology and coordinate research and/or development activities, whilst not abandoning traditional tested systems and processes.
  • To carry out or over-check calculations, analysis and testing as required to ensure safe, reliable operation while meeting the required performance criteria.
  • Develop the team through determining training requirements and mentorship of less experienced engineers
  • Take responsibility that concerns are recorded accurately, resolved in a robust and timely manner and actions are taken to prevent reoccurrence.
  • To understand applicable regulatory or homologation requirements and ensure compliance with necessary regulations and standards.
  • Develop, continuously improve, and ensure adherence to, RML Procedures, Standards and Engineering Guides so that the team work efficiently and learning is captured.
  • To comply with RML’s health and safety policies, ensuring that work is completed in accordance to safe working practices.

In terms of experience, we need you to have:

  • Upper Degree Level in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent qualification
  • Experience in the structural and cosmetic development of composite, aluminium and steel structures
  • Experience in low volume production methods
  • Excellent materials & manufacturing process knowledge
  • Excellent experience in managing complex workloads, preferably across projects
  • Experience with race or automotive design & development requirements and production control docs (NVH ,FMEA, PPAP, APQP, Gap & Flush CC SC’s etc)
  • Experience in FEA simulation and results interpretation
  • Experience leading with a high performing team in compressed timelines
