This is ideally a full-time + long-term role, but the school will consider part-time applicants.

Working Hours: 08:30 - 3:30
Responsibilities:
  • Provide one-on-one or group support to students with hearing impairments, ensuring their access to the curriculum and classroom activities.

  • Interpret lessons, discussions, and instructions into British Sign Language for students who rely on sign language as their primary means of communication.
  • Support students in developing their BSL skills and facilitating their integration into mainstream classrooms.
  • Collaborate closely with teachers and other professionals to adapt teaching materials and strategies to meet the needs of students with hearing impairments.
  • Assist students in using assistive technology and other devices that aid communication, such as hearing aids or cochlear implants.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, providing emotional support and encouragement in their educational journey.
  • Monitor and assess students' progress, behavior, and achievements, providing feedback to teachers and parents/guardians.
  • Collaborate with the school's Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) and external specialists to ensure appropriate support for students.
  • Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities to enhance your skills and knowledge in working with students with hearing impairments.

Qualifications and Skills:
  • Enhanced Child & Adult DBS - ideally on Update Service (or willing to apply).
  • Proficiency in British Sign Language (BSL) is essential. Relevant qualifications or certifications in BSL are highly desirable - minimum Level 2.
  • Experience working with individuals with hearing impairments or within a special educational needs (SEN) setting is advantageous.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate in BSL and spoken English.
  • Understanding of the educational needs and challenges faced by students with hearing impairments.
  • Patience, empathy, and the ability to adapt teaching techniques to meet individual students' needs.
  • Knowledge of assistive technologies and communication aids used by individuals with hearing impairments.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, parents/guardians, and external professionals to support students' development and progress.
  • A commitment to promoting inclusivity and advocating for the rights of individuals with hearing impairments.
  • Familiarity with relevant legislation and safeguarding guidelines for working with students with special educational needs.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to meet the changing demands of the school environment.
