Teacher/Assistant SENCO

Status: Temporary (one-year contract, Sep 2023-July 2024)

GRADE: MPS/UPS

RESPONSIBLE TO: Deputy Principal – SENCO

MAIN DUTIES: Supporting the leadership of SEND;

Working with the SENCO and SEND support team to ensure high quality teaching and learning across all key stages; Target-setting, planning and implementing of provision for students with a range of educational needs;

Supporting SEND student transition and reintegration

Assistant SENCO

We are looking to recruit into a newly created role of Assistant Special Education Needs Co-ordinator (Assistant SENCO) based at the Beacon of Light School. This is a temporary role based on current level of student need.

In this new role you’ll assist in managing the provision for students with SEND and support the SENCO in all areas, with specific areas of responsibility.

All duties and responsibilities are centred around the SEND cohort at the Beacon of Light School, focusing on the following 3 areas:

· Curriculum Support

· Assessment & Application

· Transition & Reintegration

SEND - Curriculum Support

To work strategically with the SENCO to lead on developing and embedding personalised SEND strategies across the curriculum This will involve liaising closely with the SEND Team to devise and implement a collaborative approach across School to supporting SEND students in the classroom. This entails modelling high-quality practice within your own teaching, and ensuring all staff can demonstrate the following in relation to every SEND student:

· Plan and teach well-structured sessions which incorporate SEND learner aspirations, across a range of subjects linked to the Beacon of Light curriculum framework

· Follow Beacon of Light internal curriculum standards linked to planning, preparation and assessment

· Have a secure knowledge of teaching SEND learners at pre-entry, entry and level 1-2

· Be able to foster and maintain SEND learner’s interests, whilst continually adapting to individual needs

· Develop a varied curriculum which enables SEND learners to develop core functional and vocational skills

· Work innovatively with SEND learners to achieve their aspirations through practical, sequential and meaningful learning tasks

· Prepare schemes of work, update and evaluate these regularly and in accordance with SEND learner needs

· Develop and deliver value added activities, including 1:1/small group work

· Know and understand how to assess SEND learners within pre-entry, entry and level 1- 2, including using standardised and non-standardised assessments

· Continually use formative and summative assessment to secure SEND learners progress

· Ensure that feedback to/with SEND learners is appropriate, specific and differentiated to their level of understanding

· Use a range of assessment criteria within one session such as non-accredited and accredited criteria to assess individual SEND learner progress

· Use progress data to monitor progress, set targets and plan subsequent sessions

· Record and use student and management data to support good and outstanding progress by SEND students. This includes tracking learners accurately and ensuring data is available at tracking deadlines

· Manage and maintain effective records to support the SENCO and monitor student progress identifying areas of underachievement

· Prepare reports, progress records and other documents as required

· Regularly review and use therapeutic guidelines and intervention strategies to inform planning for individual SEND learner need.

· Monitor and evaluate pupil responses and ensure that all pupil voice is collated

· Have a clear understanding of the needs of all SEND learners and be able to use and evaluate distinctive teaching approaches to engage and support them

· Present SEND learner progress at multi- disciplinary learner progress and welfare meetings and be ready to respond and adapt session planning and approaches depended on meeting actions

· Have a secure understanding of how a range of factors can inhibit SEND learner’s ability to learn and how best to overcome these in practice.

SEND - Assessment & Application

· Working closely with the SENCO to support, prepare and submit EHCP applications.

· To support the SEND Team with the development and review of personalised support plans on a termly basis

· Assessing level of need for prospective EHCP student admissions to the Beacon of Light School.

· Ensure assessments are carried out in a timely way for students referred to Beacon of Light School, in line with the referral process timeline.

· To carry out assessments to interpret EHCPs or other statutory assessments of needs to ensure outcomes are considered during assessment process and quality assure the content of written assessments.

· Flexible and responsive to managing change and conflicting workloads/deadlines on a frequent basis to ensure statutory obligations are met.

· Supporting the SENDCO in meeting EHCP requirements in accordance with both internal and external statutory deadlines.

· Undertake effective assessments which lead to the appropriate banding and funding applications made to Local Authorities.

· Ensure all reports are accurate and to identify and decide the recommended support and funding required, in preparation for panel.

· To support the SENDCO in representing the Beacon of Light School by contributing to placement queries, challenges and tribunals, representing assessed needs for individuals and with awareness of statutory entitlement.

· Prepare accurate and detailed reports and lead on their presentation for all cases at panel meetings

SEND - Transition & Reintegration

· Supporting effective transition on entry/exit to the Beacon of Light School for all SEND students.

· Leading on the coordination of centre baseline assessments and attending the face-to-face assessments/observations at the student’s current commissioning school.

· Liaising with Family Liaison Lead visiting the home environment for SEND students, obtaining accurate information to support the young person in a detailed report prior to arrival

· Analysing EHCPs and ensuring that all appropriate prospective students, parents and carers and all parties involved in the plan are clear about how the Beacon of Light School plans to meet need

· Ensure accuracy and attention to detail when identifying information from all assessments with all discipline teams to ensure a clear, formal record of all students needs

· Produce initial rationale reports to include knowledge and understanding of SEND needs in relation to curriculum and personal support needs.

· Working with Deputy Principal (Quality of Education) to ensure that students are placed on appropriate programmes of study for the appropriate levels of entry to the Beacon of Light School

· Managing the progression information for all students returning to commissioners at the conclusion of the placement at the Beacon of Light School.

· Managing the successful reintegration of SEND students to their commissioning schools to reduce the risk of PEX
