HMP Forest Bank are currently recruiting Teacher of Personal Education and Learning Support .
HMP Forest Bank serves the courts of Greater Manchester and maintains strong links to the local community with a focus on resettlement. We aim to deliver quality of life services and support people to change their lives for the better.
Opportunities for learning and developing work-ready skills are on offer for all who come into custody, but our commitment to reducing a in local communities does not end at the prison gate. We support people released from custody through innovative partnerships in substance misuse services in Bury and Oldham, working with people to maintain recovery and lead law-abiding lives.
As well as the 16 residential units on site, there is a healthcare centre, gym, library, workshop complex, visits hall, chaplaincy and kitchen. The prison’s capacity stands at 1,460, holding adult men both on remand or sentenced and young prisoners between the ages of 18-21 years.

Main Responsibilities- To understand the Functional skills curriculum and the vocational skills curriculum so that targeted support can be provided.
- Ensure that all learners, including those with special or additional needs are able to access education and the whole curriculum
- To be able to input learner data on the computer management system.
- To ensure that Quality Assurance is of a very high standard and will meet inspection requirements by Team Leaders, management and OFSTED
- Working with individuals who may have physical disabilities, sensory impairments (ie visual or hearing), speech and language difficulties, learning difficulties such as dyslexia, conditions such as autism, social, emotional and mental needs or have a combination of these difficulties
- To contribute to a safe, secure and supportive environment for SEN learners
- Raise standards of student attainment and achievement for SEN learners within the prison
- Be a visible presence around the department contributing to a calm and purposeful atmosphere
- Work and collaborate with other teaching staff within the department/prison to ensure that the activities reflect the needs of the students within the subject areas
- Support and advise other teaching staff to ensure they are providing the best quality support for all learners
- Actively monitor SEN student progress following up underperformance
- Teach individuals or groups of learners within, or outside the class
- Develop and adapt conventional teaching methods to meet the individual needs of learners using specialist equipment and facilities where available and required
- Ensure all LDD learners have appropriate support
- Contribute to the writing of ILP’s for identified SEN students ensuring targets are communicated clearly and effectively to learners and staf
- Meet agreed prison targets which will be identified in your PDR and reviewed regularly throughout the year

The Ideal CandidateEssential
- Full teaching qualification (Minimum of CTLLS) or PGCE
- A good understanding of the Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) code of practice
- To have an interest in the rehabilitation and resettlement of offenders
- To have an ability to communicate effectively at all times through different mediums, including spoken and written communication
- The ability to manage confrontation and challenging behaviour
- Patience, understanding and empathy with learners
- A positive, energetic and enthusiastic outlook
Desirable
- Experience of working in a custodial environment
