The Art Department consists of a team of three Teachers of Art and a Technician. We are a collaborative team and collectively we share our knowledge of our individual specialisms to provide the very best teaching for our pupils. Pupils are a pleasure to teach at Hereford
Cathedral School and they are always very keen to experiment creatively with a range of materials and ideas.

Art is a subject which should be enjoyed by all. We hope our enthusiasm for Art inspire our pupils and give them a strong and broad experience in the visual arts from Years 7-9 and hopefully beyond as an option at GCSE and A Level.

In September we launched a school wide digital strategy. All teaching staff and pupils in Years
7-10 and 12 have their own digital inking device which is incorporated into our teaching and learning. We are developing ours and the pupils’ skills with digital media alongside more traditional processes to provide a truly broad and exciting learning experience that develops their creative capabilities.

Art is a very popular subject at GCSE and A Level and we have good numbers opting for Art and also Art Textiles at A Level. Significant numbers of pupils have gone on to study for creative degrees at renowned institutions including The London College of Fashion, University of the
Arts, Camberwell and Nottingham Trent University to name a few.

The Department believes that pupils should be happy to come to their Art lessons and has the following aims:

  • To teach pupils at a level at which they experience success but are frequently challenged
  • To extend the most able pupils and support those who require it and get the best out of every individual pupil.

Years 7-9

Art is taught in mixed ability groups and we ensure that we cover a broad range of processes from Year 7 through to year
9 including sculpture, printmaking and painting. Pupils are encouraged to respond to a variety of artists and designers to develop their projects and understanding of Art. Every project is underpinned with an emphasis on quality observational work.

GCSE

Art is a popular option at GCSE and students really enjoy the independence and freedom that can come from learning a creative subject. At the start of Year 10 all pupils are taught a range of painting, printmaking and sculptural processes in response to artists and designers. From here they are then given the freedom to take their project in a direction of their choosing so they are able to develop their skills and ideas in an area that inspires them the most.

A Level

At A Level both Fine Art and Art Textiles courses are offered with strong numbers opting for one or both at this level. In Year 12 we introduce pupils to a range of increasingly advanced processes supported by the study of Artists and Designers before they take their projects on a more individual and self-directed journey. Significant numbers of pupils go on to study for creative degrees on some of the best Art and Design courses in the country.

Results at GCSE and A-Level are consistently excellent, with well over half our pupils earning grade 7 or above at GCSE, and the majority of our candidates attaining grade A or higher at A
Level.
