The Service
At Surrey County Council, our Advisory Teachers for Vision Impairment (VI) are part of the Physical and Sensory Support (PSS) Service. This specialised teaching service supports the specific needs of defined and vulnerable children and young people in Surrey, ranging from 0 to 25 years old, as well as their educational establishments. Whether it's their school or even their home during the early years, we ensure that individual and organisational needs are identified and met.
Operating within a dynamic and fast-paced environment, PSS focuses on supporting children and young people who have complex additional needs, disabilities, and vision impairments. We collaborate closely with their families, schools, and educational settings, including further and higher education institutions, as well as other professionals and organisations involved in their care and development.
Our service plays a crucial role in supporting statutory duties and provisions while promoting achievement among the students we support. If you have a passion for making a positive impact on the lives of VI children and students, then this is the role for you!
The role
As an Advisory Teacher for VI, you'll bring extensive knowledge of additional needs, disabilities and the provision required to meet those needs.
We are seeking a Qualified Teacher for Vision Impairment (QTVI) with exceptional verbal and written communication skills, a strong understanding of assistive technology for VI and effective case-management abilities. With these skills, you'll be equipped to deliver a comprehensive service within a complex statutory framework, focusing on high-risk and high-need groups. Your current and substantial experience will include working with braillists, particularly at secondary-school level, as well as experience of working with VI children and students as an onsite QTVI in resourced provision and as a peripatetic QTVI.
About you
To be considered for an interview, your application should include a supporting statement that clearly explains your interest in and commitment to working with VI children and students, particularly braillists, including those with additional needs and disabilities.
Additionally, please provide evidence of your:
- Teaching qualification and mandatory Post Graduate Diploma (PG Dip) for Teachers of Children and Young People with Vision impairments
- Extensive knowledge, skills, and experience of working with VI children and students, particularly braillists at secondary-school level, some of who have additional needs and disabilities.
- Successful collaboration within an advisory/peripatetic team and experience in resourced provision for VI, specifically at the secondary-school level
At Surrey, our values and behaviours are just as important as our skills and abilities. They shape who we are as an organisation. Find out more about the values we follow.
