Watford is an urban borough in South West Hertfordshire; The borough has excellent transport links with mainline rail connections to London. Watford is the centre of a sub region serving around 500,000 people living within a 20 minute travelling time catchment. As part of the London commuter belt Watford is strongly influenced by London which brings the benefits of a buoyant economy.
12 months paid internship
This is an exciting opportunity to work at the heart of a new National Lottery Heritage lottery funded project that aims to get more people involved in the restoration of the River Colne. Tales of the River forms part of a major restoration project that will explore the social and ecological importance of the river and guide residents to take positive action to shape the story of its recovery as nature returns.
The role:
Over a 12-month period the successful candidate will support the project by undertaking a varied work programme which will include:
- Supporting and leading the planning and hosting of community events, walks and talks
- Responsible for delivering ‘Travelling Tales’ – an exhibition, to be transported around Watford, inviting people to contribute photographs, objects, letters, recordings etc
- Building relationships with community groups throughout Watford
- Supporting and leading family learning and outdoor play activities
- Taking part in practical green space improvements
- Learning how to design promotional materials, including audio and video content
- Working as part of a small project team, including volunteers
- Excellent communication skills are key along with being well organised and with an interest in community and environmental issues
- The role will require working outdoors and access to your own transport is essential for site visits
- This role is subject to an enhanced DBS check
What we are looking for:
- Education and Qualifications: GCSE Mathematics and English Language Grade C or above or equivalent
- Motivation and willingness to learn
- Confident communicator
- Time management and organisational skills
- Flexibility – able to adapt to changing circumstances
- Self-motivated
- Team player
- IT literate - training will be provided on any specialist programs (i.e., design software)
- Social media literate
- Driving licence
- Knowledge of community groups in Watford
- Interest in nature and the environment
- Creating films and images for social media
- Groundwork East. This role will be seconded to the environment and community charity Groundwork East under the National Lottery Heritage Funded Tales of the River project
- Rediscovering the River Colne project team
- WBC parks and heritage
- Watford Museum team
The role will require working outdoors and access to your own transport is essential for site visits.
