Job description

We are seeking to appoint a Systems and Data Administrator to join our world-leading team at the Centre for Medicines Discovery, Nuffield Department of Medicine.
We are looking for a talented systems administrator to look after the day-to-day running and maintenance of CMD enterprise IT (server/storage) platforms, including configuring new platforms both on premise and in the cloud. As part of this role and in keeping with our open-access approach, there is a need to improve our handling of biomedical research datasets stored on our platforms, including keeping records, curating and archiving them as well as helping our researchers share them with others. This will require direct interaction with students and staff at all levels within the CMD and beyond on a day-to-day basis.
Reporting to the PI of Research Informatics at the CMD, you will work closely with the CMD IT officer, Medical Sciences IT Services, the University IT Service and the Biomedical Research Computing Centre to provide flexible and compliant enterprise IT and research computing solutions for CMD researchers. This includes ensuring effective information governance compliance and data management best-practices.
It is essential that you hold a degree in a relevant subject, together with proven expertise in VMware and Linux systems administration, and a demonstrable interest in gaining an advanced understanding of such systems. You will have experience of writing and maintaining tools in a language such as bash or python and you will have and understanding of issues relating to system security, reliability and availability. The ability to develop and enhance expertise in relevant fields is also essential for this role and you will have an interest in supporting one of the world’s leaders in medicines discovery and we will provide relevant training to allow you to be highly successful. You will have excellent communications skills, including the presentation of complex technical ideas.
