An exciting opportunity is available for a Windows Systems Administrator in our Computer Services Team based in Exeter or Plymouth. Working in a dynamic environment, designing, deploying and supporting server-based systems that form part of the UK’s Critical National Infrastructure.

Main Responsibilities- Assisting in the design and implementation of new systems and system upgrades, including:
- Installation and configuration of server-side software, including integration with existing systems.
- Liaising with third party software providers and systems integrators.
- Making use of automation technologies where applicable.
- Documenting system installation, upgrade and operational procedures.
- Investigating new technologies for potential implementation in response to business needs.
- Providing operational support for a large and diverse estate of Windows Servers, including:
- Providing an escalation point for issues being investigated by L1 and L2 support teams.
- Undertaking investigations when issues are reported to the team.
- Working with SMEs in other teams to assist in the diagnosis of complex problems.
The successful candidate will have:
- Windows server deployment and administration skills.
- An understanding of Microsoft Active Directory (AD) and its underlying components, including group policy management, DNS management and AD configuration.
- An understanding of system security and how deploy new systems in accordance with sound security practice.
The following would be beneficial:
- Scripting ability to an intermediate level using Microsoft PowerShell.
- SysOps experience (e.g. using Ansible, Microsoft DSC, Source Control, CI/CD etc.)
- Experience of any of the following Microsoft technologies: Active Directory Federation Services, Certificate Services or SharePoint.
- An IT qualification or equivalent accreditations.
The successful candidate will be able to work as a member of a team of Windows administrators performing a variety of system support tasks together with the delivery of new business projects and applications. As a member of the team, you will be expected to participate in a compensated “Out of Hours” standby working arrangement and may be required to work overtime. As the team supports multiple sites, a driving licence is required.
As the post you are applying for attracts a National Security Vetting clearance there are further eligibility requirements, information can be found on the gov.uk website. To meet national security vetting requirements you will normally need to have been resident in the UK for at least 5 years for Security Clearance (SC) prior to the date of application. There are exceptions to this however and examples of these include:
- you have been serving overseas with HM Forces or in some other official capacity as a representative of HM Government
- you were studying abroad
- you were living overseas with parents
