Role Purpose:

The Digital Media Investigator will support investigations that require specialist digital skills by attending crime scenes, developing, and delivering against digital forensic strategies and by providing evidence and intelligence to officers and staff from the retrieval of digital devices. Provide advice and guidance to officers and staff concerning digital devices.

The DMI will promote the use of Digital Media as a vital source of intelligence and evidence and ensure best practice by conducting investigations in line with current legislation and policy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain a good understanding of digital opportunities for investigations, for example, CCTV, ANPR, Comms Data, Telematics, internet, networks, RF, WIFI, computers, telephones, storage devices, and ’internet of things.’
  • Advise Senior Investigating Officers on the most effective techniques to harness digital evidence and intelligence.
  • Develop digital forensic strategies to support investigations into serious crime in conjunction with DFU, SPOC.
  • Support all levels of investigation to maximise digital opportunities and provide tactical advice to investigators. Assist officers and staff to interpret the data extracted.
  • Assist officers in the execution of search warrants and provide specialist advice and guidance on the correct methods of seizing and removing digital devices and other internet enabled equipment. Triage digital devices at scenes.
  • Downloading of suspects and victim devices, providing evidential/intelligence package.
  • Review and grade indecent images of children.
  • Conduct open-source research at the appropriate level, ensuring evidential and intelligence product integrity.
  • Analyse a wide range of data and prepare expert reports to present the data in an admissible format, suitable for review by the investigation team.
  • Submit case files and present evidence in Court in a clear and comprehensible manner.
  • Proactively identify opportunities available through existing and emerging technologies. Develop processes to ensure they become mainstream investigative techniques, supporting South Yorkshire Police to meet its strategic objectives.
  • Keep up to date with legislation, policy, and procedure, and liaise with colleagues in other Law Enforcement Agencies in order to share and learn from best practice. Ensure effective knowledge sharing across the department and with the district DMAs to aid continuous improvement.
  • Promote the use of Digital Media as a significant source of intelligence and investigation, ensuring that operational officers and staff understand and are aware of the benefits, by:
  • Utilising the intranet to share news, updates, and practical guidance.
  • Supporting Crime Training to deliver DMI training.
  • Delivering bespoke presentations, briefings and training as required.
  • Manage and coordinate new and existing digital forensic methods that are subsequently brought under the accreditation of the digital forensic umbrella.

Fixed: This is a traditional arrangement, applicable when the work is mostly required to be undertaken at a fixed single place of work (on police premises) for most of the time. The work can only or is more effectively delivered from a police premises or other agreed organisational/partner premises.

Field: This applies to roles that do have a base, however, due to the nature of their duties is required to travel to other locations. Due to the nature of these roles, they cannot accommodate flexible working from home on a permanent basis.

Hybrid: Applicable when the work can be undertaken at any location, whether that be a SYP building or from home.
