Role Purpose:

To work as part of a team within the Professional Standards Department. To assist with the investigation and administration of complaints made against police officers and internal enquiries into matters affecting the intelligence gathering, investigation and discipline process within South Yorkshire Police.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collect and gather material and assess intelligence and evidence from a range of sources (e.g. Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) / SYP systems) and retain and maintain records in a format that is evidentially admissible to support the professional standards investigative process.
  • Deal with enquiries and evidence gathering relating to complaints and understand continuity of evidence. This may include collation of documents / items required as exhibits and the safeguarding of evidence.
  • Assist with electronic preparation of case papers for criminal matters to the Crown Prosecution Service.
  • Obtain statements from complainants and witnesses.
  • Interview witnesses and suspects and gather all required evidence in relation to professional standards investigations, to generate further lines of enquiry where required, to build a balanced and proportionate case.
  • Undertake revelations to the Crown Prosecution Service and complete disclosure schedules for conduct matters.
  • Complete referrals to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as necessary.
  • Assist Investigating Officers with initial actions following deaths in custody / police contact.
  • Investigate matters relating to death or serious injury matters for oversight by the IOPC, once the Method of Investigation is established.
  • Liaise with outside agencies and partners, especially the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) and act as a Single point of contact (SPOC) for independent investigations.
  • Lead investigations for conduct allegations involving Police Staff.
  • Undertake face to face contact with complainants and interested persons for DSI (Death / serious injury) matters, understanding risk and vulnerability.
  • Attend Coroner’s court / criminal or misconduct proceedings to present evidence and evidential statements ensuring that the information provided is within required standards to support the criminal justice and/or misconduct proceedings.
  • Plan and identify own investigative actions, consider resources, priorities, and proportionality to achieve investigatory objectives.
  • Seize, examine, retain, and disclose all material generated by investigations to ensure that they are managed in accordance with legislation and policy.
  • Prepare thorough reports on the outcome of investigations. Identify lessons learnt and share best practice.

Eligibility:

Applicants must meet the minimum requirement checkable history criteria, which must be taken into account for individuals applying to work with South Yorkshire Police in any capacity. A minimum checkable history of 5 years is required for this role and successfully undergoing recruitment vetting procedure is a pre-requisite of employment with South Yorkshire Police.
