Job description
- As a member of the university sustainability team, you will identify and deploy technical energy and carbon reduction projects. You will help colleagues to quantify their opportunities to save energy, water and carbon by developing convincing business cases.
- You will use your communication skills to present and familiarise staff and students with energy and carbon matters. Your proactive and collaborative attitude will help each department to better understand its energy, water and carbon impact, and what they can do to improve this impact.
- Your contribution will be instrumental in preparing and securing university carbon reduction investments and funding justification packages including multi-million bids and partnerships.
- Your strong experience of energy and carbon in the built environment will make a significant contribution to reducing environmental impact of the university estates. You will need to be conversant with regulated, unregulated and embodied carbon definitions and ways to improve them.
- Together with colleagues you will monitor accuracy by continuously tracking energy and carbon data collected across the university’s extensive metering system to identify progress towards university sustainability targets. You will use the data to identify, initiate and implement efficiency savings towards the university’s multi- million utilities budget.
- You will have a leading role in compiling the university annual sustainability report with support from colleagues, as well as drafting improvements plans to meet the university’s net-zero target.
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Experience in energy and water consumption reduction projects to reduce carbon emissions scope 1, 2.
- The ability to communicate, engage and collaborate at all levels and make representation of the university sustainability strategy principles and values.
- Motivational skills to engage colleagues to take action and deliver plans.
- Expertise of energy and carbon in the built environment.
- The ability to drive concurrent projects with ease.
- Good negotiation skills to overcome challenges along with implementing opportunities.

Job Description
Assist the Senior Energy and Carbon Manager in the delivery of the University Way to Sustainable Strategy by identifying, designing, and implementing Energy & Sustainability projects and policy. Support utility data collection services; utility and carbon accounting, internal cost allocation and forecasting. Manage and prioritise the allocation of internal and external funding streams for the delivery of the Way to Sustainable Strategy.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Continuous analysis, modelling, interpretation and forecasting of operational energy and carbon data to identify inefficiencies and opportunities.
- Develop and propose engineering projects or operational changes to achieve energy and carbon reduction; carry out feasibility studies and business case justification for approval by senior managers, ensuring continual progress towards the Way to Sustainable Strategy Goals.
- Submit detailed applications for external funding for carbon reduction projects, liaise with engineering managers where carbon reduction projects are delegated to others and continually monitor all projects to ensure target performance is met and maintained.
- Accurate tracking and reporting of university carbon emissions and progress against reduction targets within the carbon management plan.
- Support the financial forecasting of utilities and carbon at University and interdepartmental level on behalf of Estates Finance. Supporting the validation and accounting of utility and legislative charges, and accurate allocation of costs to internal and third-party consumers.
- Provide an active role in the management of the utility monitoring system for the purpose of providing high quality operational data for performance analysis and reporting. Identify and propose opportunities for expanding and ensuring accuracy and statutory compliance on all metering installations. Development of data processing and analysis tools for financial and carbon accounting.
- Implement selected carbon reduction projects from inception through to handover.
- Support the Senior Utilities & Energy Manager with mandatory Carbon and Energy compliance schemes and procurement and contractual performance monitoring of Utility contracts.
