Job description
The University or Warwick seeks to appoint an enthusiastic and passionate team member to deliver the implementation of its ambitious scope 3 Sustainability Strategy, known as “Way to Sustainable”.
- Your role focuses on enthusing and coaching procurement specialists and suppliers towards scope 3 carbon emissions reduction targets.
- You will identify and drive a range of initiatives to engage suppliers in measuring and reducing their emissions and environmental impact, as well as ensuring accurate accounting of scope 3 and other sustainable supply chain efforts.
- You will support UoW Departments with their sustainability action plans to adapt and reduce impact of goods and services they need.
To be successful in this role, you will have:

Job Description
Accountable for developing appropriate sustainability assessment models and necessary recommendations within area of expertise for Procurement and Finance and scope 3 carbon emissions.
Responsible for promoting awareness, supporting positive behaviour change and usage of campus natural assets.
Contribute to developing departments’ sustainability plans around procurement and scope 3 emissions.
Act in line with and always promote the University’s Way to Sustainable (WTS) strategy and its Guiding Principles.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for leading and driving engagement and managing actions with stakeholders to support successful promotion and delivery of the University’s sustainability strategy, with focus on enabling and delivering targets for the University’s Procurement/Finance related activities.
Governance
Sustainable Impact Assessment (SIA)
- Responsible for coordinating with Procurement and Finance teams to include scope 3 data in Procurement management information packs for departments.
Sustainability Strategy
- Supporting the leadership team to raise awareness across the University. procurement/finance community on scope 3 emissions and contributions in achieving the University’s net-zero targets.
- Monitor progress against University strategy targets in Procurement related activity and compare with international best practices to advise.
- Responsible for initiating and driving actions with procurement team and across supply chains to move from spend based to activity based scope 3 reporting.
- Responsible for defining and agreeing necessary action plans collaboratively with Procurement team and University departments to drive reduction in scope 3 emissions.
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
- Support the Head of Sustainable Campus Operations in taking ownership for goals 9, 11, 12 and 17 on behalf of the Estates Office. Identify and foster relevant initiatives and communication.
Collaborate with the Research Community
- As appropriate, engage with WMG and the University research community to suggest research topics related to scope 3 emissions such as the need for innovative materials and processes.
Engagement
- Promote and act as champion of WTS and its Guiding Principles in all internal and external dealings. Lead by example. Develop communication plans based on the Guiding Principles to promote results and initiatives.
- Take leadership and collaborate with Sustainability and Communication teams to inform, motivate, and incentivise change of procurement and consumption across departments.
- Collaborate with Procurement teams to raise awareness and educate supply chains as necessary.
Behaviour Change
- Enthuse, facilitate, and support implementation of scope 3 emissions reductions projects.
- Develop business cases and programmes using data and qualitative analysis.
- Take leadership for collaboration with Transport and Projects teams to address UoW key areas of scope 3 emissions.
Utilities
- When working around the campus, proactively seek to identify opportunities for utilities wastage and consumption reduction. Collaborate with Senior Energy and Carbon Manager and Head of Sustainable Campus Operations to address.
Reduce emissions
- Working closely with all relevant finance and procurement teams across the University to develop co-ordinated plans for reduction of scope 3 emissions associated with the procurement of goods and services and monitor progress.
Operations
Monitoring and Reporting
- Continuously engage with the Finance/Procurement team to raise awareness on scope 3 emissions and explore options to reduce them.
- Monitor and share UK and international best practices relevant to the University.
- Support the Procurement team to engage University suppliers in a co-ordinated way, to initiate reduction programs. Monitor effectiveness.
- Develop and seek management approval for business cases of financial and carbon savings at the University and in the supply chain.
- Engage where appropriate with departments to identify and validate potential opportunities for student led projects in respect of scope 3 emissions reduction.
- Responsible to maintain accurate data stream and reporting relevant to their area of
Departmental Sustainability plans and Budgets
- Provide support to Head of Procurement and Insurance to define a Procurement sustainability plan covering own activities and including appropriate sectors of the University’s supply chains.
- Together with Procurement leads, responsible for engaging with key suppliers to define, negotiate, and agree scope 3 reduction targets.
Reduce consumption
- Responsible for engaging with University stakeholders to seek goods and services consumption reduction through applying knowledge of supply chain emissions and emissions reduction opportunities to explore alternatives (rent, repair, share...).
Communication
- Responsible for effective communications initiatives development and delivery for her/his area of responsibility.
- Use data to render information and messages specific, meaningful, and convincing.
- Promote communication on achievements, good news and need for improvements.
