Job description

Sustainability and ESG, Government Relations & Policy
London

As a Barclays Sustainability and Environmental, Social and Governance, Government Relations & Policy Manager, you need to cultivate strong and deep relationships across key external audiences including regulators, government officials, MPs and trade associations. Through these relationships, you will drive increases in familiarity and improve knowledge of the bank’s sustainability and ESG actives. This is a key role to build networks and promote initiatives that enhance perceptions of Barclays.

Barclays is one of the world's largest and most respected financial institutions, with 329 years of success, quality, and innovation behind us. We offer careers that provide endless opportunity – helping millions of individuals and businesses thrive and creating financial and digital solutions that the world now takes for granted.

We are currently in the early stages of implementing a hybrid working environment, which means that many colleagues spend part of their working hours at home and part in the office, depending on the nature of the role they are in. We’re flexible on how this works and it may continue to change and evolve. Depending on your team, typically this means that colleagues spend a minimum of between 20% to 60% of their time in the office, which could be over a week, a month or a quarter. However, some colleagues may choose to spend more time in the office over a typical period than their role type requires. We also have a flexible working process where, subject to business needs, all colleagues globally are able to request work patterns to reflect their personal circumstances. Please discuss the detail of the working pattern options for the role with the hiring manager.

What will you be doing?

  • Ensuring Barclays leverages its Group-wide resources appropriately to have the greatest possible influence on the formulation of ESG policy by external policy makers and standard setters
  • Working with internal stakeholders to formulate Barclays response to changes in, or for-mation of legislation via position papers, consultation responses and meetings
  • Designing, documenting, and delivering strategic political stakeholder engagement plans for the CEO and other ExCo members to enhance political understanding of Barclays
  • Driving communications, events, and public affairs efforts to build Barclays reputation amongst political stakeholders
  • Coordinating and writing briefs for senior Barclays representatives ahead of key govern-ment meetings
  • Producing internal communications, briefing materials to internal stakeholders on new leg-islative and regulatory proposals on how to engage UK standard setters most effectively
  • Supporting the firm’s interaction with relevant trade associations and industry bodies on UK policy issues
  • Ensuring regular updates of the policy agenda relevant to Barclays are provided to key stakeholders, working closely in partnership with colleagues notably in the impacted busi-ness areas

What we’re looking for:
  • Understanding and experience of ESG and climate agenda and experience of dealing with government regulatory stakeholders
  • Excellent communication skills, spoken and written and ability to explain complex policy is-sues and topics at a non-technical level
  • High levels of initiative, ability to anticipate and solve problems, excellent team player who reflects the Barclays Mindset
  • Coordination and organisation skills and ability to multi-task and turnaround requests quickly under pressure

Skills that will help you in the role:
  • Ability to build strong internal and external relationships
  • Experience of briefing senior stakeholders
  • An understanding of the political and public policy landscape as it affects Barclays in the UK and the EU
  • Ability to prioritise conflicting work demands

Where will you be working?
In the heart of Canary Wharf, our headquarters at Churchill Place boasts onsite amenities such as: a gym, staff restaurant and deli bar, and is easily accessible by tube and bus links. With a population of around 5000 staff the atmosphere is second to none with a real buzz being created around the offices within.
