Job description
The post holder will work as a part of a team that delivers services to individuals who are in the criminal justice system.
The post holder is primarily required to work in the community undertaking short term pieces of work with individuals referred to them by senior workers.
The post holder is expected to support individuals attend first appointments for assessments by other services such as drug and alcohol services, community mental health teams, autism services, Housing, etc. The post holder will also support the roll out of the use of Mental Health Treatment Requirements as a part of a Community Order and a fair criminal justice outcome.
There may be times that the post holder will support a senior worker with the triage and assessment of referred individuals in court and custody.
The post holder will be expected to work across Luton and Bedfordshire at satellite bases and in order to meet the needs of service users.
Liaison and Diversion is a dynamic and responsive team who work with people who have identified vulnerabilities in the Luton and Bedfordshire area. By vulnerable, we mean those who present with mental health illness, learning disabilities, substance misuse, neurodiversity and other vulnerabilities such as domestic violence, acquired brain injuries or homelessness. We have also developed a female offender pathway in order to better support throughout the criminal justice process.
The majority of our referrals are received from Police Custody, however we accept referrals from various sources and receive many from probation, court and other mental health providers.
Following the assessment process, L&DS may refer individuals to relevant health or social care agencies. On occasions, it may be necessary to divert individuals out of the criminal justice process. For example, those in a mental health crisis requiring further assessment and treatment.
The aim of the service is to address health and social care inequalities with a view to reducing the risk of offending behaviour.
Administrative/Managerial Duties:
1. To participate in multi-disciplinary decision-making, team building and team maintenance.
2. To review as required with the Operational Lead, the overall nature of the service, work methods and techniques and evaluating clinical practice as a whole.
3. Provide accurate returns, statistics and reports as required by the Operational Lead and NHS England/Commissioners.
4. In co-operation with the Operational Lead, to report incidents such as complaints and/or accidents, to ensure that appropriate documentation is completed and returned to the Operational Lead as soon as possible following the incident.
5. To ensure that safeguarding policies and procedures are adhered to.
Training and Education:
1. To be responsible for updating own knowledge of contemporary interventions and techniques and national developments of the service.
2. To contribute towards team education and development, providing opportunities for exchange of ideas, experience, techniques and interventions.
3. To develop an awareness of the research and background information relevant to individuals presenting with vulnerabilities in the criminal justice system.
4. Have knowledge and understanding of the legislation and guidance likely to be encountered, including: NHS Service Specification 2016, Mental Health Act 1983; Misuse of Drugs Act 1971; Access to Information Act 1986; Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, Working Time Directives, Social Care Act 2012, Mental Capacity Act, Autism Act 2009, Equality Act 2010, etc.
D Performance Management:
1. To ensure that required targets and activity levels are delivered as required and as identified in the LaDS operational policy.
2. To ensure that up to date and accurate information and excellent quality recording of contacts is recorded in a timely manner, ie the same day.
