Job description

Job Purpose
To provide technical and administrative support to assist in the delivery, particularly large animal (farm animal and equine) focused clinical skills and pathology training and assessments of undergraduate students, plus supporting academic staff within the School of Biodiversity, One Health & Veterinary Medicine.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching:
1. To coordinate with key staff (e.g. clinical skills coordinator) pre-clinical and clinical practical classes and assessments (e.g. OSCEs, DOPS, spot exams), including the logistical requirements for staff and animal resources.
2. To assist in the day-to-day organisation and preparation of scheduled clinical skills demonstrations and practical classes, primarily in the farm animal and horse facilities at different locations; and secondarily in the post-mortem facilities. Ensure that classes are set up correctly to deliver the variety of practical skill sessions required for the School's undergraduate programmes, providing in depth technical support as required.
3. When required, responsible for sourcing and ensuring the collection of all fresh materials used in the undergraduate course(s): liaising with management and veterinary staff at local animal welfare centres, farms, fallen stock collection centres and abattoirs to ensure the availability of fresh cadavers and farm animal specimens; working alongside abattoir staff to collect specimens.
4. When necessary, overseeing the preparation and maintenance of specimens for the respective teaching and assessment sessions.
5. Contribute to the well organised functioning of the facilities by maintaining stock levels and purchasing consumables and supplies, within budget, and in consultation with UG School manager and farm manager.
6. Participate in team meetings/discussions and group activities proactively to ensure smooth and effective delivery of technical skills teaching.
7. Keep up to date with advancements in technology and methodology, continually updating technical knowledge.
8. Providing administrative support and organisational assistance to academic staff members involved in respective teaching and examination activities, as requested.
Other:
9. Transport of cases to the PM facility, assistance with carcass handling as appropriate.
10. Ensure the welfare of any live animals used in teaching is protected.
11. To act as Fire Warden and First Aider for Teaching facilities.
12. To ensure the safe and efficient functioning of the various areas, supporting the respective H&S representatives in the completion of risk assessments and COSHH assessments (as appropriate), thus help ensuring that all Health and Safety paperwork is completed timeously and recorded accurately, and implementing and adhering to health and safety policies, as determined by the University and the HSE.
13. Responsibility for proactively ensuring that all necessary electrical and mechanical equipment is always maintained and operational. Troubleshoot day to day problems relating to equipment, techniques, procedures, and protocols, carrying out maintenance as required.
14. To undertake any other technical duties as directed by Line Manager within the responsibility levels of the grade.
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 5 or 6 (National 5 or 6, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 2 or 3) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role. (Typically, a veterinary nursing / agriculture / farm animal science and/or equine animal science / animal care qualification or an equivalent technical / professional qualification).
A2 Knowledge of large animal husbandry/management systems (farm animal and/or equine), in the UK and/or of production animal veterinary practice.
A3 Must have a valid full UK driving licence, manual test passed and held for minimum of 2 years and over the age of 21.
Desirable:
B1 An HNC or equivalent in a relevant scientific discipline.
B2 Specific relevant qualification(s) for working with large animals.
B3 Certificate of Competence to transport livestock.
Skills
Essential:
C1 Good basic technical knowledge and skills in all aspects of farm animal and technical support, typically within a farm, or veterinary practice setting.
C2 Good interpersonal and communication skills, orally and written.
C3 Good working knowledge and understanding of Microsoft packages, including Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Excel.
C4 Good organizational, time, project and people management skills, with the ability to prioritise workload to meet competing demands.
C5 Ability to impart/demonstrate skills to a wide range of staff groups with differing backgrounds, when required.
C6 Self-motivated with the ability to work independently, assess priorities and manage workload with the minimal supervision, and to work to tight deadlines.
C7 Use of initiative and judgement to resolve problems independently.
C8 Ability to work as a team member.
C9 General manual handling skills (lifting and handling etc.)
Desirable:
D1 Good basic technical knowledge and skills in all aspects of farm animal and technical support, typically within a stables or veterinary, practice setting.
Experience
Essential:
E1 Experience of working with farm animals & horses.
Desirable:
F1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post, for example, - having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role.
F2 Experience consistent with this post in a veterinary practice, research or teaching setting documented through references.
F2 Knowledge and experience in animal diseases and pathogenesis.
F3 Experience in driving tractors and other plant vehicles.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 4, £22,197 - £24,715 per annum.
This post is full time and open ended.
