Job description
Summer Internship - Effective conservation of the genus Bulbostylis in Africa
Bulbostylis (Cyperaceae) is a species-rich tropical genus of herbs, comprising around 120 species in Africa. Species richness in the genus is highest in Central Africa, where it has diversified in a wide range of habitats as savannahs, wetlands and even volcanic ashes. While some species are widespread, many have highly restricted distributions and so are of high conservation concern. Therefore, there is an urgent need to delimit and document these species and to quantify their threat status to help prioritise future conservation efforts.

More details
Kew is leading research into the diversity and distribution of Bulbostylis with the ultimate aim to produce a global monograph, and has unparalleled collections of the genus housed in our herbarium. Under the guidance of Kew’s specialists, this project will collate existing data on Bulbostylis, aided where available by citizen science data. An updated database of African Bulbostylis species, with revised distributions and assessments of their threat status, will be produced. Morphological and anatomical studies of selected species groups will also be undertaken to help delimit species including those potentially new to science. The student’s findings will contribute to our ongoing research into Bulbostylis, and there is a high likelihood that the research undertaken in this project will lead to at least one scientific publication as well as published extinction risk assessments on the IUCN Red List.
