Job Title: Summer Intern Systems Engineer
Location: Barrow (Cumbria)
BAE do offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements, however it is expected, on your Summer Internship, you will be required to attend your site 3-4 days per week. Please note, this may be subject to change in line with the needs of the business. The hybrid working arrangements including which days you are required to work on site/remotely will be outlined by your line manager.
Salary: £22,000 (Pro Rata)

Here at BAE Systems – Submarines we design and build some of the most technically advanced submarines in the world, which are more complex than the space shuttle.
Working on one of our projects such as Dreadnought, Astute or the replacement for Astute (known as SSNR), you will gain experience across various stages of the product lifecycle. You will learn to consider important factors such as schedule, cost, training and environmental concerns. Under technical supervision you will provide Systems Engineering services to the project from requirements management to systems architecting and modelling.
As well as the technical aspects of projects, you’ll also learn to consider important factors such as schedules, costs, training, through life support whilst always considering safety and environmental concerns.
Under technical supervision, you will provide Systems Engineering services to Product & Training projects, bids and improvement initiatives as directed by the Systems Engineering Discipline Lead
Working in a variety of teams such as:
- Systems architecture;
- Modelling and simulation;
- Requirements management;
- Governance and assurance;
- Testing and integration.
Listen to the customer needs and build a bespoke system for engineers to translate to the mechanical, hardware, and software teams to use to create the detailed engineering design for the respective areas.

- Supporting the development of strategies to ensure that systems are designed and integrated so that they fully satisfy the customer and business needs/requirements
- Supporting the design and optimisation of system architectures and solutions using system modelling techniques
- Liaise with MOD establishments, test facilities, sub-contractors, suppliers and customers as required
- Liaise with Supply Chain, Operations, Test & Commissioning, ILS and other internal functions as required
- Determining the emergent properties of a system to support trade-offs, optimisation, risk reduction and testing
- Defining the verification and validation approach in order to achieve certification and acceptance of the system
- Drafting technical reports or other documents relevant to, or required by, a particular task in order to ensure that information can be successfully communicated with recipients
Skills
As a minimum requirement you’ll need to be on course for achieving a 2:2 in your Bachelor’s degree in any STEM subject, including Mechanical, Aerospace, Automotive or Structural Engineering. To be considered for this role you must be returning to University to complete your degree.
