Job details
A great opportunity for you to join us at either East Suffolk Council or Suffolk County Council as a Summer Intern/Project Officer for 12 weeks, working from various locations in Suffolk, depending on the placement.
It is a very exciting time to be working in Local Government. Service demand and financial pressures mean that we have to work in very different ways to meet these challenges. We are having to think differently about how we can deliver essential services in a dynamic, flexible and cost-effective way.
To help us do this we are looking for talented individuals who are comfortable working in a busy and evolving environment who can bring creativity and help shape our long-term sustainable solutions to the challenges we face.
All Internships/Fixed term projects will start on 12 June 2023 (or as close to this date as possible) making this a perfect opportunity to invest in your future and gain employability skills this summer.
We are local government authorities responsible for maintaining countywide public sector services within Suffolk.
Our aim is to lead as exemplar employers, offering opportunities to people who are driven and want to make a difference to the people of Suffolk.
Your role
Roles are based at one of our modern and conveniently located offices, and we can also offer some hybrid working, with a mix of office and home working, depending on your placement. However, feedback from previous year's interns has told us that you will gain the best experience from being mostly office based.
The internship programme is specifically designed for UK undergraduates who are seeking to gain and develop employability skills. However, we are now opening up this opportunity to anyone who is looking for a 12 week role during summer 2023 so you will not necessarily need to fit this criteria. The Internship/fixed term projects role consists of a 12-week hybrid placement with opportunities in the following teams, to complete specific projects:
- Fire Protection
- Green Access
- Standards & Excellence
- Economic Regeneration
- Customer Experience
- Billing & Benefits
- Change & Communications

What you will need
- for this opportunity, you will need to be eligible to work in the UK.
You can view a full list of requirements in the Job and Person Profile (docx). If you think you have what it takes to be successful in this role, even if you don’t meet all the requirements, please apply. We would appreciate the opportunity to consider your application. This includes if you are not a student as we have now opened this opportunity up to anyone looking for 12 weeks of employment over the summer period.
We will offer you
- you can expect to be paid the National Living Wage for your hours worked, and you will be eligible for an annual leave entitlement during the 12 weeks. Business travel expenses, where eligible, will be reimbursed.
- flexible working is actively encouraged throughout the council.
Travelling requirements for your role
We positively encourage the use of technology to communicate and engage, but in this role, you may need to operate across a wide and rural area, so it would be beneficial for you to either hold a full and current driving licence and have access to personal transport or meet the mobility requirements of the role through other reasonable and suitable means. If you require a reasonable adjustment due to a disability to meet the travel requirements of this role, please speak with the contact detailed below.
This role supports hybrid working, a broadly even balance between working from home and working from an office base. Please speak with the contact detailed below if you wish to discuss how that might impact your working arrangements. #LI-Hybrid
