About the role
Learning Pool is recruiting placement students to join the team for the academic year 2023 to 2024. You will be studying a Computer Science related discipline at degree level and will have completed at least year 2 on commencement of the placement. This is the ideal role for someone with some level of experience in PHP or other C-based programming languages as well as HTML/CSS.
As an integral part of our web team you'll be involved in the development of cutting edge e-learning and social networking web applications, you'll get to work in a creative, innovative and fast-paced environment and get the opportunity to prove your technical credentials every day. Placement students will get exposure to Software Development, System Administration, Quality Assurance and Product Management.
This is a challenging role, but in return we'll offer a unique opportunity to learn, to make an impact and to provide a sound foundation for your future career. In addition to a generous package for the placement, Learning Pool have a scholarship available for two of the most promising students. This includes a bursary for year two at university and a possible bursary for year four.
The placement will start in June 2023 and will finish at the end of May 2024
What you will be doing
Roles and responsibilities include
- Hands-on coding in line with best practice coding standards (often to meet tight deadlines)
- Ensuring the high standard of development expected through rigorous testing
- Helping with writing specifications and estimating time required to deliver on projects
- Delivery of software using agile project methodologies
- Quality Assurance - testing our software before delivery to customers
- Project Management - an introduction to project management principles and an understanding of how the software that you are developing is used by our customers
Who we are looking for
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Technical curiosity: You will have an keen interest in the software development cycle
- Practice: You will have some software experience, preferably in open source technologies and on LINUX or UNIX environments
- Knowledge: You will have knowledge of HTML/CSS and databases
- Problem Solving: You will enjoy working through issues to find the cause of problems, suggest solutions and apply this thinking to process improvements
- Eager to learn: You will need to be able to engage quickly with complex, technical and unfamiliar subject matter
- Positive approach: You will have a professional, collaborative and open minded attitude towards colleagues, clients and ways of working
- Communication skills: You will be able to express yourself effectively both verbally and in writing
