Job Purpose
The Student Life Trainer and development worker will be based within Student Life which sits within the Student Life and Student and Engagement team within the broader directorate of Student and Academic Services. This role will work across the two services within Student Life, Peer wellbeing support and Residence Life.
The focus of the role is to a) develop and deliver training and development opportunities to the teams of student staff and volunteers that work within the Student Life Service and b) to take a lead on specific projects that will enhance the experience of students who work within or access services within Student Life. You will be a motivated and positive professional who thrives in a role which is dedicated to the personal and professional development of students. You will be a creative and independent team member who is comfortable taking the lead in specific projects from initiation to completion.
Training and Facilitation
The Peer Wellbeing Support Service offers a student-led peer-to-peer listening service for students. Your role is to draw on your own knowledge, training and experience within the field of counselling to train and supervise this group of students to offer a professional standard listening service. This is an early intervention and self-referral service. Students come to the service to share daily life concerns such as academic worries, wellbeing worries and issues relating to settling into life at University. The Residence Life Service includes a team of student staff who deliver peer support to Students out of hours. They run social events and help students settle into life in halls and at University. They are a first point of call if students have any out of hours maintenance issues, they offer early intervention listening support for students with mild wellbeing concerns and escalate concerns relating to students to internal and external emergency and crisis support teams.
Project development
You will bring your skills and expertise in project development to Student Life. You will work both independently and in collaboration with other team members across the service to develop various aspects of the Student Life service. These projects will be time specific and will vary. They will be identified by the Student Life Manager and in response to the needs of the service. Projects will include the development and delivery of the Residence Life training program.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. To work closely with the other members of the Student Life team.
2. To work flexibly and in response to service requirements across the Student Life team.
3. To develop, deliver and evaluate the existing 9-week Peer wellbeing support program to students who wish to become Peer Supporters.
4. To facilitate supervision and support sessions with students working within the Peer support service.
5. To conduct an analysis of training needs and existing training material within the Residence Life Team.
6. To develop and create training materials using the on line learning platform Moodle.
7. To develop and evaluate training materials and impact of training across Student Life.
8. To lead on various projects which will enhance Student experience of those volunteering within and working within the Student Life Service as identified by the Student Life Manager.
8. To regularly meet with Student Life Manager to discuss progress and to explore and respond to recommendations for improvement, change or direction as appropriate.
9. To report/escalate to Student Life Manager, CaPS, campus security and/or GP/NHS in difficult cases, risk cases, cases where any doubt is involved or cases that need natural escalation.
10. To research and keep up to date with approaches to learning and development in relation to Peer support and Residence Life across HE and other sectors to inform practice.
11. To work in accordance to BACP Ethical Frameworks for the Counselling Professionals.
Knowledge, Qualification, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
A1 Recognized qualification in Counselling or Psychotherapy or equivalent.
A2 Scottish Credit & Qualification Framework level 8 or above or equivalent (including professional training with an accredited course.
A3 Registration with appropriate recognised professional body e.g. UKCP/HCPC/BACP/BABCP/COSCA.
A4 Thorough knowledge of BACP ethical frameworks and guidance on counselling.
A5 Knowledge of issues facing young people, particularly issues related to mental health and wellbeing.
A6 Demonstrable understanding of working confidentially and with strong awareness of professional boundaries.
A7 A working knowledge of GDPR, Freedom of Information Act and Equality Act.
A8 Demonstrable understanding of the fundamentals of facilitating healthy group work and healthy group culture.
A9 Understanding of the principles of effective facilitation.
Desirable:
B1 Recognized professional qualification in Clinical Supervision or working towards this and experience of continued personal development.
Skills
Essential:
C1 Skilled in facilitation, co-facilitation, or training.
C2 Capacity to build good relationships with young people.
C3 Demonstrable skills which show confidence in delivering training via remote learning platforms (e.g. zoom, MS Teams) and using these platforms to engage with students and colleagues on daily basis.
C4 Experience in using online learning platforms e.g. Moodle or alternatively if you do not have these existing skills you are confident in learning the skills required to do so.
C4 Skilled in motivating groups and individuals to work to their full potential and reflect on their own beliefs, practices, and behaviour.
C5 Ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively with other stakeholders, relevant partners and teams.
C6 Skilled in working as part of a team
C7 Demonstrates confidence in taking a lead on project development, from initiation to completion stage.
C7 Skilled in thinking creatively and seeing opportunities for service growth.
C8 Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Desirable:
D1 Proven track record in promoting health and wellbeing training or delivering appropriate training sessions to groups.
Experience
Essential:
E1 Experience of facilitating training or group work sessions with young people (aged (16+) preferably relate counselling, mental health or wellbeing.
E2 Experience in design and delivery of interactive and engaging training materials and resources.
E3 Experience in evaluating impact of training.
E4 Experience in project development and service promotion.
E5 Experience of working in a team.
E6 Experience in working independently to grow and develop projects or services.
Desirable
F1 Experience in delivering Youth work/Peer Support and/or counselling skills training or similar mental health related initiatives.
F2 Experience of providing training to student in FE/HE context.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 6, £30,502 - £34,308 per annum.
There are two part time (28 hours per week), open ended positions available. Salary will be pro-rated to number of hours worked.
