Job Purpose
The Data Analyst will support the work of the Innovation and Economic Development teams at the University of Glasgow. These teams sit at the heart of the innovation agenda within the University of Glasgow and have recently published a new Innovation Strategy that provides a clear vision for the future direction of the Directorates. The Data Analyst will work in close collaboration with team members to deliver strategic insight and performance reports. The job holder will be responsible for a wide range of insight generation on (but not limited to) Innovation metrics (e.g. patents, disclosures, industry income), economic development indicators (employment, investments) and benchmarking. The job holder will also be responsible for taking forward work to understand and quantify the impact of our activity around the Glasgow Riverside Innovation District (GRID). The post requires the holder to be comfortable extracting and analysing data, explaining patterns, developing analytic models and effectively communicating the stories found within data. While working in Innovation and Economic Development, the post holder will be closely aligned to the Planning, Insight and Analytics Team, who are responsible for delivering high quality analytical outputs across the institution.
Main Duties
  • Deliver statistically robust insight and analysis into all areas of innovation and economic development, for example, progress against key performance indicators such as patents, spin-outs, investments.
  • Support the University governance and management structures by providing reports and insight to committees that allows us to understand our innovation and economic development progress.
  • Responsible for communicating across the University at all levels the insight and outputs of analysis undertaken.
  • Engagement with key stakeholders and working collaboratively with colleagues to investigate and highlight areas of best practice and poor performance.
  • Work with external stakeholders and data providers to develop new approaches to data analysis and collaborate on joint projects as required.
  • Establish and maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the University’s academic provision and outputs to be able to accurately prioritise, inform and present integrated analysis.
  • Compile and translate data into engaging data stories that identify key messages and trends, ensuring that analysis is appropriate for each audience – ranging from senior management to school staff.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across the Innovation, Economic Development and Planning Insight & Analytics function to use the most appropriate technology to carry out, present and issue analysis and insight across the university.
  • Represent the team at meetings, external groups/conferences and seminars to keep up to date with national developments and gain and share information/knowledge of working practices in the higher education context.

Essential
A1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar or number of different roles. Or Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4), or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training), and experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).
A2 Knowledge of analytical techniques.

Experience
Essential
E1 Experience of working with data and producing a range of data analysis.
E2 Experience of working with data visualisation / business intelligence software (e.g. Tableau, PowerBI, QlikSense, Business Objects).
Desirable
F1 Previous experience in similar analysis role.
F2 Experience of using data transformation and science software / languages such as R, Python, SQL or Alteryx.


Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, £39,347 - £44,263 per annum.
This post is full time (35 hours p/w) and open-ended.
