Job description

The Department for International Trade plays a critical role in the UK Government’s approach to ensuring supply chain resilience in the UK’s supply chains. The Global Supply Chains Directorate leads on ensuring resilience in critical supply-chains, assessing vulnerabilities and actions to be taken to secure resilience. We work to strengthen the long-term resilience of the UK’s critical international non-food supply chains, improving our national security and economic resilience through international trade.

We do this by:

  • Strengthening our understanding and monitoring of the UK's critical supply chains.
  • Designing policies and guiding interventions to strengthen the long-term resilience of global supply chains.
  • Creating and supporting international efforts to strengthen the resilience of critical supply chains.

We are looking for a strategic thinker who is delivery focused, looking for an opportunity to get to grips with an intellectually stimulating high profile policy area.

This role will focus on several critical sectors and will require collaboration across the department and Whitehall, to build strategic supply chain resilience considerations into both domestic and international policy agendas and cement joined up cross Whitehall working in this space going forward.

Job description

In this role, you will:

  • Support policy development and strategy in specific sectors to ensure resilience for critical global supply-chains.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with OGDs, No.10, HMT and Secretaries of State to work in a joined-up way to develop and implement mitigations which ensure supply chain resilience for the UK, ensuring Senior Official and Ministerial approval.
  • Organise and run meetings with XWH partners to build strategic supply chain resilience considerations into both domestic and international policy agendas.
  • Work across government to co-ordinate the development of a strategy for addressing climate risk to global supply chains and international trade networks, supporting the delivery of the UK National Adaptation Plan.
  • Lead on Net Zero supply chains policy, supporting the undertaking of Net Zero supply chain analyses that will ensure that the supply chains which are critical for the transition to Net Zero are secure and that the UK maintains access to the critical goods that our growing green economy will need.
  • Write policy advice and briefing documents for senior stakeholders and ministers.
  • The postholder may have line management responsibilities.

  • Experience engaging across Whitehall.
  • Experience briefing senior officials/ministers and writing submissions.
  • Experience in policy and strategy development across Whitehall.

You will be an excellent communicator – both written and orally - confident writing for a variety of audiences, preparing briefs, submissions and papers for colleagues and seniors, including Ministers, and presenting your ideas to colleagues. You will present to a high standard and be able to summarise key messages for different audiences.

You will have a strong interest in and focus on continuous learning and be open to learning, keeping knowledge and skills set current and evolving.

You will be personally resilient, flexible and a good team player.

Hybrid working

The role will be based in either Darlington or London. You will be asked to express a location preference during the application process.

Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.

Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average. If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.
