Are you looking for an exciting new opportunity to work as a Senior Spinal Surgery Fellow?
We are currently looking for someone to join our team at Musgrove Park Hospital in the above role. This role will support you to reach a level of independent operative and outpatient management and to enable you to apply for Consultant Spinal Surgical posts after completing the Fellowship, if all criteria for CCST/ CESR are satisfied.
As part of this role you will support the consultants in providing, to a high standard, the full range of spinal surgical specialist services to patients, as outlined in the proposed timetable. You will also assist the consultants in the diagnosis and management of spinal surgical patients, and to perform or assist in day case and inpatient surgical procedures.
This is a training post in the Somerset Spinal Surgery Service at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, based at Musgrove Park Hospital. You will be joining a multi-disciplinary Spinal Surgical team and will help us to expand the Spinal Surgical services provided within the Trauma & Orthopaedic Department.
The Spinal Surgical Department in Taunton currently has a total of 5 whole-time Spinal Consultants and one locum Spinal Consultant working in a Department of 20 Orthopaedic surgeons structured into 5 teams – Spinal Surgery, Upper Limb, Foot & Ankle/Lower Limb, Joint Replacement/Revision and Paediatric Orthopaedics.
Please note that you may be required to work some programmed activities during evenings and weekends, but you will have time off in lieu during the working week. This will be discussed with you as the need arises.
You will be expected to help with the education of medical students, and doctors in training. You may be asked to assist in the assessment and appraisal of trainees, and you will keep the Clinical and/or College Tutor aware of any educational/professional problems that may arise.

The Spinal Surgery Service based at Taunton & Somerset Hospital, Musgrove Park provides a comprehensive Spinal Service to the whole population of Somerset, including the catchment areas of Taunton and Yeovil Trusts. We are contracted to provide spinal surgical service to Island of Jersey. We also take some referrals from North Somerset (Weston Super Mare), North Dorset (via Yeovil), North Devon (Barnstaple/Exmoor), and East Devon with an approximate catchment numbering 1,000,000. Outpatient clinics, and all surgery, are undertaken at Musgrove Park. We liaise closely with the OASIS East and OASIS West Interface Triage Clinics held in Bridgwater, Minehead, Chard, Yeovil, Frome and Shepton Mallet Community Hospitals, and the Somerset Community Pain Management Service.
Access Times
The Spinal Surgical Department is committed to reducing waiting times for elective patients in line with NHS RTT targets and service agreements with the Clinical Commissioning Groups.
Education & Audit
Teaching is actively encouraged at all levels in the Division and the Trust. Clinical Audit is well developed in the Trust. It has the largest clinical audit computerised database in the South West, which provides regular data for clinical audit, research and resource management. Trainee logbooks, acceptable to the Royal Colleges, are available online. The department has a well-organised and co-ordinated audit programme with a monthly timetable for audit presentations in protected sessional time.
There is a modern Academic centre with lecture, conference and training facilities, and a comprehensive Medical Library. This is currently being expanded to accommodation the addition of medical students from University of Plymouth. We also teach medical students from University of Bristol.
Cooperation with other Departments
Apart from the close work with 10 Extended Scope Physiotherapists who work exclusively in Back Pain/Spinal Surgery across primary and secondary care in OPD and Interface clinics, we have close links with:
- Radiology Department with monthly Radiology MDT
- Microbiology with monthly Infection MDT
- Oncology with MSCC Coordinator role, monthly Oncology MDT and close links to Acute Oncology Service and Regional Oncology Network. The Beacon Centre which delivers oncological and radiotherapy support on site was opened in 2011.
- Paediatric Services including specialist Neuromuscular service and Paediatric HDU
- Anaesthetic Services with 6 specialised Spinal Anaesthetists
Medical and PAM Staff
The post holder will join other medical staff, both permanent and trainee, and will have the option to participate with them in providing on-call cover.
The post holder will support and train the ward based CNPs, F2 and Orthopaedic Registrars in care of Spinal inpatients and in liaison with primary/community care, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Orthotics and Plaster Room staff.
