05/05/2023Internship - Investigation of Additive Manufacturing for Space Rated Components
Space Forge Ltd is a UK start-up that is looking to lead the clean industrial revolution by harnessing space. We are developing fully reusable satellites that are designed for manufacturing next generation super materials in space for return to Earth to be used to help move to low carbon technologies. In early 2023 Space Forge has grown to over 50 people and we have built Wales’ first satellite factory in Cardiff. We plan to launch several missions over the next two years.
Project Description:
In the near future Space Forge will be developing its additive manufacturing capabilities in order to design and manufacture components for spacecraft. To achieve this significant progress will need to be made in understanding space standards, manufacturing limitations, and best practices when designing parts for additive manufacturing.
The SPINtern will support in reviewing and implementing processes that will assist Space Forge in their capability to design parts for additive manufacturing. Activities as part of this project will include:
Reviewing and summarising space standards for the design and verification of additive manufactured parts- Research, design and printing of parts to assess the precision and other limitations of 3D printers
- Design, manufacturing and testing of parts in order to understand the material properties of additive manufactured parts
- The research and implementation of processes and best practices for designing additive manufactured flight hardware Applicant Specification:
- Is willing and able to learn new skills rapidly via online research and self experimentation
- Has passion for the space and green technology sectors
- Ability to work effectively both individually and in small teams
- Able to write coherent reports and manuals to help others understand their work

- Able to act responsibly and safely in the working environment
Minimum Requirements:
- Are studying or just completed a science-based degree
- Is eligible to work in the UK without a visa
Preferred Additional Requirements:
- Experience with CAD and additive manufacturing
- Knowledge of tolerances for manufacturing
- Knowledge of Space standards such as ECSS
Further details:
8 weeks minimum fixed term contract to be agreed with successful candidate. In person/hybrid Induction Event to be held on 19 June 2023, and an in-person/hybrid Showcase Event to be held at the 2023 UK Space Conference in Belfast between 21 November to 23 November.
